Decedent: D. W. Handspiker
Source: Digby Courier
Surnames: ANDERSON, HANDSPIKER, MIDDLETON, ROWE
Submitter: Digby Courier
The death took place at Broad Cove , on Wednesday , Nov. 7th.of Mr. D. W. Handspiker in the 75th year of his age . He had been in ill health for several months. The deceased is survived by his wife, five sons, William, Wallie, Ernest, and Stewart, of Broad cove, Judson in the United States, and
three daughters Mrs Middleton, Broad Cove, Mrs Rowe of Boston and Mrs Anderson of Glouster. The interment was in Broad Cove, Rev. W. I. Croft of Digby, conducting the service. Much sympathy is extended to the wife and family.
NOTE: Prior to obituary, year of birth was often found as 1834, which made it difficult for some researchers to distinguish David William H. from David James H.
Another interesting "aside"... the majority of his children tended to be called more by their middle than first names, to include their nicknames. Not sure if this was some sort of family custom, or what it might be. Just odd. Though, that also causes concern as HIS middle name was William, and from many sources, he had a brother named William. There is at least a slight possibility that this other William may not be a separate individual???? Still much clarification needed here, in my opinion. (June 2002).
Along with Edward (Edmund) Needham Handspiker (his uncle), was co-owner of the schooner "Rambler" (built in 1847 at Digby).
Birth year shown in 1901 Culloden Census is 1842.
Tombstone #3 in EFB Cemetery.
1881 Canada Census for Digby, Digby County, Nova Scotia lists the family as follows:
