[158] In the past, this family has been very confusing. Susan Elizabeth Tidd has been seen referenced as "Mrs. Hersey" (valid, because of her first marriage) and also as "Lizzie Tibbs" (She WAS called "Lizzie" and Tibbs MUST have been a TYPO by someone a while back). All indications are that this family is as recorded in this database.

One note, however, is in relation to the children. We KNOW that Arthur was born a Hersey, and some indications might suggest that Bertha was, as well. There is also at least one record (SOMEWHERE) that indicates Arthur had a sister "Annie". Now, perhaps Bertha was either Bertha Ann or Ann Bertha, or something which might have caused confusion OR, he may have, at one time, at least, had two sisters?

Death notice was published 7 Sep 1923 (both papers), and reads as follows:

Culloden News - "William E. Handspiker died at his home, Monday, aged 56 years. Interment in the Baptist Cemetery."

Digby Courier - "William E. Handspiker of Culloden died on Monday after a long and painful illness at the age of 56 years."

In the 4-Sep-1925 Courier is the following Memoriam, by Mrs. Otis Middleton, William's sister, who also did same for their mother:

"There is a beautiful land where all is bright,
No sickness, no anguish, no sorrow, no night.
There happines dwells and joy reigns forever,
In that beautiful land just over the river.

Oh Jesus my Savior be with me at last
And guide me safe over then all danger is past.
My soul shall adore thee for ever and ever
When I find my self there just over the river."

John J. SICKMAN

[1877]

ABT 1819 - ____

Family 1 : Elizabeth KINNEY
  1.  William Henry SICKMAN
  2. +James Albert SICKMAN
  3.  John Wesley SICKMAN

INDEX

[1877] 1870 US Census for Tippecanoe, Marshall, Indiana:

Sickman, John J., 50, m, w, Farmer, Ohio
Sickman, Elizabeth, 46, f, w, keeping house, Ohio
Sickman, William H., 22, m, w, farm hand, Ohio
Sickman, James A., 15, m, w, at home, Indiana
Sickman, John W., 10, m, w, at home, Indiana

Some researchers believe John was brother to Peter (b. 1819), Barnhart (b. 1825) and Henry (b.1827) all born Ohio to the same unidentified parents. As all were "independent" by 1850 US Census, would need 1830 or 1840 Census for Ohio to see what possiblities exist. All of them were born in Ohio and lived at some point in Tippecanoe, Pulaski Co, Indiana.

One WFT (Vol 104, Tree 969) shows John Sickman Sickman, b. 18-Jun-1821, s/o Phillip & Hannah Sickman
That this is the couple who was parents to the four brothers, among others.

Children of couple listed as Hannah (b.5Feb1803), Peter (7May1819) , John (18Jun1821),
Margaret (18Jul1823), Barnhart (25Jun825), Henry (31Jul1827), Catharine (16May1830),
Jonah (30May1832), Maria (23Nov1835), Lucy (3Feb1837), and David (11Feb1842)

Yet another (WFT Vol 40, Tree 1485), shows John Sickman, b. 8-Sep-1821, Guernsey Co, OH, USA, died Douglas Co, OR, though!
He was listed as s/o Luke Sickman, b. Jul-1789, Allegheny Co, PA, marr: Margaret Arbuckle, 17-Apr-1810,
Guernsey, OH, d, 24-May-1856. Luke was s/o George Sickman, b. @1750s, PA, and Suffia Huffman. George died
1817, Mifflin, PA.

Back in the early to mid 1700s, there was a John Sickman who arrived in Pennsylvania, after coming with other
Palatines, aboard the ship "Pleasant" (around 1732/33). Though another record indicates 1749, then 1751.
Perhaps he came to establish himself, returned for family, or for a bride? This John is likely John Henry or
Johann Heinrich Sickman.

From "History of Wayne County, Ohio : from the days of the pioneers and first settlers to the present time
", Douglass, Ben, Indianapolis, IN, 1878, Page 705:

"John Sickman, was a native of Washington County, PA, where he was born 23-Mar-1800. He came to Wayne County in
1820, and settled in 1822 on land his father, Barnhart Sickman, had entered from the Government some years prior
to that date. On this farm, now owned by his son, W. K. Sickman, he lived until his death 04-Mar-1872."

Now, could abov have been father of John?? Uncle???

In Guernsey County, Ohio, for Tax list of 1810, we find both a John Sickman and a Priestly Sickman.
Same county, 1814, add to the two in 1810, a Luke Sickman.
