Bethial ?

[1142]

____ - 24 Dec 1895

Family 1 : George HANDSPIKER

INDEX

[1142] Have nothing to ensure Bethial was THIS George's wife, except the only other George Handspiker of the time period was married to Catherine. Could be all the same George with two wives. Until so proven, will leave Bethial as THIS George's wife (at least as a placeholder). Obituary reads as follows:

Digby Courier---Dec.27, 1895, Friday,----Mrs Bethial Handspiker, widow
of the late Geo. Handspiker died on Tues.at a well advanced age. She has
been in poor health for sometime. The funeral yesterday afternoon was
largely attended.

[48] OFTEN called "Freeman", especially by family.

Date listed:Thursday, June 3, 1943
Decedent: Freeman Handspiker
Source: Digby Courier
Surnames: HANDSPIKER, PECK
Submitter: Luella Marshall
The death of Freeman HANDSPIKER occured at his home in Mount Pleasant on Monday May 31 , after an illness of several months duration. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs David HANDSPIKER and died on the homestead where he was born seventy-four years ago. His
wife , formerly Eliza PECK of Bear River predeceased him several years ago.He is survived by one brother Jerry (Jeremiah Ellis Handspiker) of the United States; and several nieces and nephews . The funeral was held in the Grace United Church yesterday afternoon, Dr. T.W. HODGSON officiating . Interment was in Fairview Cemetery.

He is the "Frances?" mentioned in the 1901 Culloden Census. As he was oft called "Freeman", that may have sparked the confusion. In fact, another iteration of the Census shows, simply "F- - - ?". In the 1901 Census, his birthday is listed as 15-Dec-1867.

41 107 Handspiker Frume M Head M Dec 15 1867 33
42 107 Handspiker Eliza F Wife M Apr 23 1867 34

His funeral record was ordered by Ernest VanTassell, nephew, residing in Digby. 10-Jun-1943: Card of Thanks: The firends of the late Freeman Handspiker, Mount Pleasant, wish to than the kind neighbours and others, who in any way assisted during his illness and death; also those who sent flowers. - Brother Jerry, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest B. VanTassell (nephew). Shows his father as David and mother as Rebecca Hamm. It also indicates Rebecca was from Bear River.

Based on obituary, year of birth SHOULD be '69, but have seen it listed anywhere from 1867-1870!

[1284] PLACEMARKER ONLY: (Note - is this a son of John and Eva or, was Eva a first wife and Rachel a second wife?) Another note of interest regarding John. Or, perhaps, a son of his named John??? There is record of a marriage between a John "Houselbekker" and a Rachel Traphagen, on 22-Nov-1795 at Kakiat, New Jersey. Married by George G. Brinkerhoff. Brinkerhoff, licensed in 1788 of Hempstead in 1800, was the "Dominie" at the Kakiat/Kekeat and Ramapo, from 1793 - 18??. In pre-1790 NJ Census, I found three Traphagens: Jonathan (in Hackensack), Johannes (also in Hackensack) and David (in Bedminster, Somerset County). I have no way of knowing which John H'packer this was, who married Rachel. Further research in the area is required. Though listed as son of John and Eva?, he may in fact be the same John who married Eva, and Rachel was a 2nd wife? I DO believe, however, he is one OR the other and not some new branch of the family.
