Have good reason to believe there is a missing generation, here. Perhaps, the E.B. born 1817 to Peter and Ferebee had a son E.B. (b. @1838) who had the children, Jesse and Edward, with wife Jane Margaret Keene. Have not yet found evidence of such, other than a birthdate in the 1871 Census, which does not correspond with the 1817 date.
Have as good a reason to belive Edwin may have married three times. Here are the wives names:
Jane Margaret Keene, Jennie Wentzell and Mary Jane Almon Weagle. The only way these women weren't all married to E.B. would be if there was another male Handspiker who went by "Bartlet" and was a shoemaker having children in Digby area in the exact same years.
I've listed Edwin's marriage to Jane Margaret Keene, because that information was provided to me, early on. However, he could have been married at least twice. Jennie Wentzell is also seen listed as his spouse. The Mary Jane Almon Weagle is the one who married Edward E/H Handspiker, father of Edward T. Handspiker. However, with the confusion over possibly two generations of Edwin Bartlett Handspikers, this is cause to wonder if, perhaps, the Weagle/Wentzell connection was the earlier E.B. and Jane Margeret Keene being the wife of E.B. the 2nd?
E.B. was a shoemaker and was listed in a Digby directory as such. This very FACT is possibly what helps to make the mystery of Edwin vs. Edward E. so interesting and unnerving at the same time. Edward "E." was listed as being a follower or member of the Salvation Army, and a shoemaker in Truro.
Seems some lines and dates find ways for E.B. to cross with Edward T. (the "Truro" Handspiker). That should be kept in mind, whenever dealing with either branch of the family. There are several possible reasons for this, which require more extensive research. At one point, I wondered, and sometimes still do, if Edwin Bartlett may have, at some point, become estranged from the Digby clan and moved to Truro and renamed himself? Time, Patience and Tough Research will be required to "clean up" this line.
Feribee (Fanning) was 84, and living with this family in 1871 in Digby, which helps at least solidify Edwin's parentage. The three unnamed sons could have been daughters listed with estimated birthdates, or, this could have just been "one of those families."
POSSIBLE ADD'L NOTES _ _ _ _ _
There is also mention of E.B. in the 1871 Census as being 33 years old, which would put him born in 1838. Does this indicate a missing generation, which could be the cause for all this confusion? Was 33 a misread of 53, which would work out more correctly for the E.B. in question?
In 1881 Census, an "Edmond" Hanspiker appears in Milford, Guysborouth, Nova Scotia, as age 50 (b. 1831?) and a shoemaker! HMM!!!!!!
THEORY: I believe the Edwin Bartlett born @1838, to be son of Edwin Bartlett born 1817 (here listed). I believe the children born between 1863 and 1876, to be children of the younger Edwin Bartlett. I also believe that ONE of the E.B.'s was a shoemaker, the other a sailmaker, as is evidenced by a "Bartlett Handspiker - Sailmaker" in MacAlpine's Maritime Provinces Directory for 1870-71. This COULD also help to explain the difficulties in sorting between the Digby and Truro bunches.
To be clear, we know the following children are the children of Edwin Bartlett. we just aren't sure if there are TWO such men, or just the one, with a very odd history.
We know Edwin Bartlett had Jessie and Edward, and, there are three dates listed for three other "sons." This doesn't match well enough with Edward, father of Edward T. and his family. However, Edwin Bartlett and the "Truro Edward" have much in common, in terms of dates and such. The whole issue with Janes and Mary Janes has surely not helped any.
These two lines require some very skillful untangling.
Also, not sure where this comes from, as no source quoted. Have seen a marriage date of 1866 for Edwin and Jane.
MUST CROSS-CHECK with Edmund Needham Handspiker. These two have some apparently mixed records, somehow.

JUST given THOSE births... it would indicate he may have had four wives??? How could he have a childe with Weagle in 1873, Wentzell in 1875, and, again with Weagle in 1876? Could the first "Weagle" have been a sister to Jane? My... this is one of THOSE families!!!
Here are 1881 Census records, in hopes of clarity... HA!

Above works for "Edward E. Handspiker", but not for what I KNOW about Edwin B. makes me think Mary Jane Weagle married Edward E. not Edwin B. *sigh*
