I remember SEEING my Great Grandfather. The ONLY great grandparent I ever met, and he died, shortly thereafter. There have been times when, due to proximity of some dates, Jeremiah Ellis has been confused with Jeremiah Judson Handspiker, but, they are surely two different men. His immigration record or "green card" (issued at Portland, Maine, USA) showed the spelling of the name with the "c", so, it was added on or before, 25-Nov-1942, which was when he applied for citizenship. Since the children were born before then, most of their birth records are Handspiker. However, through their lives, the "c" seems to have magically appear. So, the name "Handspicker" was original to this family, and did not appear until the 1920 Census. Since Dorothy was born a Handspiker in 1918, we can make a general assumption that the "c" was added circa 1919. That, OR, the Census taker in 1920 may have been the first to spell it so. As an aside, Jeremiah is listed as "Jere" in the 1920 US Census for Wells, York County, Maine.

Of unkown parentage. As listed as 25 in 1880 US Census for Houlton, Aroostock, Maine, he doesn't fit the only three known Georges I've run across. The Houlton connection is not unusual, as many people crossed to the border town from NB, off and on. However, the age doesn't fit, as noted birthdate is within 25 years of 1855. In the 1880 Census, he's listed in a hotel/boarding house run by William S. Buzzell, as single, and 25 years of age, b. NB, parents born NB, a carpenter. (Ref: National Archives Film T9-0477; Page 446D)
PROBLEM: Knowing that Maurice Hanselpacker, b. 1884, was born in Houlton, Maine, and his father was George, though originally listed as born in 1837, could the 25 for George's age in 1880, been correct and the date of 1837 been INcorrect?
NOTE: 1860 US Census for Aroostook County lists a William Hanselpacker. Remember, the Hansels come from Houlton area, which is VERY close to the NB border and a common place to find "stray" Hanselpackers.
