EARLY NOTES (discussing confusion on Delilah Milbury/White/Handspiker): The two Delilahs issue causes some concern with just which wife (if there were indeed two) was the mother of which children. In gendex.com genealogy, only two children are listed with Delilah Handspiker. My concern is that the two Delilahs are in fact, one. That would explain being totally unable to find any parentage for Delilah. My suspicion is, at some point, Delilah Milbury may have married a Handspiker, or, been adopted?
This Delilah COULD be the same person who married John White in 1881??? Possibly having been Delilah Milbury, before marrying Mr. White, and the records of her as Delilah Handspiker being from well AFTER being married to Mr. White and possibly after death of Ross? Pretty confusing, but with the name "Delilah" my suspicions are, we're talking about the same person, here. Which indicates to me, she was likely born as Delilah Milbury, married John White, either outlived or divorced John and, by 1901 was married to Ross Handspiker and living in or near Bear River. Found in 1901 Census for Bear River with Ross Handspiker.
In /rtwgen/mwheeler (gendex.com) genealogy, John White married Delilah Milbury (22-Aug-1861), and had 13 Children. He then married Delilah Handspiker? and had two children? In the 1901 Census for Bear River/Annapolis, a Delilah ? is married to Ross Handspiker. Since THIS Delilah married John White in 1881, I think, would she (if the same one) have been Delilah White, when marrying Ross Handspiker??? I will enter as separate people, for now. (June 2002)
Believe that, somehow, records have been played with. Believe, it it makes sense, Delilah was the same person, who married John White and had all the children. The fact that Delilah Milbury is referenced as Delilah H. Milbury, indicates she may have been married to a Milbury, before marrying John White.
Otherwise, the records would indicate they didn't marry until AFTER 1886, with Delilah H. Milbury having died BEFORE 1886, and John just happened to gravitate towards Delilahs?? Could Delilah Milbury have married Ross Handspiker, during a break with John White? This just gets a bit too confusing. It's also interesting that no parents have been found for her as a Handspiker, which makes the Ross possibility even more comprehensible.
CURRENT:
Recent e-mail from Judy Peck (Jan-2003), a White descendant, bears fruit. It seems Delilah DID marry John White, first, then Ross Handspiker. Will amend and combine two Delilah's for clarity.
At least one source lists 1881 as date for marriage of Delilah and John, which means all children in 1881 Census would have belonged to an earlier wife, for which I've never found any record.
[470] In some records he's listed as dying shortly after he and Ferebee were married. He's also listed as being the father of John Simeon Smalle (Handspiker). He's also listed as living, well after the children of Ferebee and Peter were being born. This line has been the source of confusion for quite some time. To clarify for the case of this genealogy, he MAY have been the father of John Simeon Handspiker, though it seems just as likely that Peter was John's father. Therefore, for those with connections to John, it is safest to list both possibilities as father. John WAS baptized as a Handspiker, and the Simeon in his name MAY be more of a "tribute" to Ferebee's first husband, than an indication of paternity.
