He was buried at Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan, Connecticut, USA. He was born on 21 September 1907 at Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA. He was the son of Alva S. Canfield and Christina M. Gandrup. Lester Canfield died on 10 May 1911 at New Canaan, Connecticut, USA, at age 3.

Most likely is the Alba Canfield listed in the CT 1830 Federal Census Index as living in New Canaan, Fairfield County (Page 458). 1 male (10-15), 1 male (30-40), 1 female (0-5), 1 female (5-10), 1 female (20-30). THIS Alba would have been around 32 years of age (2nd male listed). No idea on the others and the older female would have been an earlier wife than Mary.

Is also likely the Alba (poss. middle name Abram) Canfield, who, while a resident of Lewisboro, NY, witnessed the 30-Jun-1842 marriage of Benjamin Towns of Darien, CT and Lucretia Carne of same.


SPECIAL NOTE: An Alba B. Canfield appears in WV and NY. The NY connection MAY be same or related, the WV connection seems to stem from a Canfield family in that region.

One NY Alba, (b. 1814, Pike Twp, Bradford, PA) had wife, Ann, and son, Alba A. Canfield (b. @1837, PA), and another son, Franklin (b. @1847, NY) listed in Allegany County 1850 Census of NY, in Almond township.

There is also an Alvah T. Canfield, b. 1812/1814 timeframe in NY, who is likely related, but, not likely any sort of 'missing link' generation in this particular family. Need to get this sorted out with Canfield Family Association. SOME Census records for NY, indicate the 'Alba' born 1813-ish was born in PA.

Could even be housekeeper, or servant, though it LOOKS more like g.niece (grand niece?).... can't make out the given name and can't even tell if there's a surname or not!

SPECIAL NOTE: Year of death EITHER 1920 or 1929. Have seen both. Dates, otherwise, are same.

In 1880 US Census, was living in Manhattan, New York, a lawyer, in either a boarding house or apartment building. Listed under the care of the Marcher family. With Dudley, shown age 32 (b. 1848) is a Minnie James, Female, age 22, b. NY, FIGURING she's Dudley's wife. AND, a son, Dudley, age 3 months. He was born on 18 April 1848 at New York, New York, USA. He was the son of Edward James and Sarah UNKNOWN. Dudley Lamentine James died on 11 February 1920 at Port Chester, New York, USA, at age 71. He was buried on 14 February 1920 at Greenwood Cemetery, Rye, New York, USA.

He Cornelius Canfield (b. 1770, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut) and Rebecca Dann (b. same year/place) who were married in 1792 at the Church of Christ in Stamford. What's interesting is the location of same date/record on a site quoting the source as, 'Selected Extracts from Landholders of Northeastern New York (1739-1802) page 241' and reading as follows:

Additional numbers may relate #of untaxed free persons other than Indians, number of saves, town and/or district of residence. The extra '2' could be 'number of people in agriculture... hard to say, not positive how the numbers really added up.

Oddly enough, in 1820, Cornelius SHOULD have been listed as over 45, but may not have been recorded as head of household???

It should be noted that most of the Canfields in Connecticut descend from Thomas Canfield, who was born 23 JUN 1623 in Minsden, Co. Hertford, England. The name, early on, was also spelled Camfield or Campfield. He was 'early of Milford, Connecticut, but not an original settler.'
The Thomas who came to the colonies was the son of Thomas Canfield, b. @1596 at Minsden, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England (not far from RAF Chicksands).

One can't help but wonder if Alva(h)/Alba and family were not descendants of Samuel Canfield, s/o Matthew Camfield and Sarah Treat, b. 1644/45 at New Haven, died Oct-1690 at Norwalk. (May have died 29-Nov-1690). In fact, they very well could be, even with the NY connection. It appears the Canfield 'Clan' moved back and forth across the NY/CT border, with records, often being found on both 'sides', or neither, depending. The amount of difficulty in determining Cornelius' ancestry is surely compounded by the volume of Canfields in their area of Westchester County, NY and Fairfield County, CT, in the late 1700's. There is a very high likelihood of at least a couple, and possibly several Cornelius Canfields in the same generation. Much work to be done to sort out his ancestry, at this point (Dec-2003).

Of note, a Jabez Canfield married an Esther Lockwood in Salem, in 1793. May be brother? (Based on Davida's work, indicating Jabez as father of Cornelius, would make sense one son was named after father)

Cornelius likely had a cousin named David, b.1777 at Salem, NY. David was son of James Canfield, and Dinah Keeler.

My best bet, so far (Jun-2003) is that Cornelius was son of David Canfield, who died 08-Apr-1775, likely in Salem, NY. However, based on 1800 US Census, another? David Canfield was resident of Salem, NY. That David's father was also David Canfield, b. 14-Apr-1711 at Norwalk, CT, who married Mary Baldwin 1736-1745, and who died, 20-Mar-1783, at Salem (Lewisboro).
David (1711) s/o Ebenezer Canfield (b. 14-Feb-1670, Norwalk, CT d. 12-Dec-1714, Norwalk) who married Mary Hennery (b. @1680, Norwalk, CT) on 24-Mar-1694 at Norwalk.

Ebenezer was s/o Samuel Camfield (b. 19-Oct-1645 at New Haven, d. 19-Nov-1690, Norwalk Note: Change of surname spelling) who married Elizabeth Sarah Willoughby (b. 13-Jun-1641 at New Haven) in 1669, in Connecticut.

Samuel was s/o Matthew Camfield (b. 27-Feb-1604, Harlestone, Northamptonshire, England, d. 19-Mar-1673, Newark, Essex, New Jersey) who married Sarah Treat (b. 03-Dec-1620, Pitminster, Somerset, England) in 1644, in New Haven, CT. This Sarah Treat is likely the source of the Alvah T.Canfields in NY.

Matthew Camfield, s/o Gregory Camfield (b. @1575, Harlestone, d. @1635, Harlestone) and Joan ?Camfield? (b. @1575, Harlestone, d. @1603, Harlestone) NOTE!!!! If he was born in 1604, how could his mother have died in 1603??? Something NOT quite 'right' here!

Of interesting note is a Daniel Canfield, menitoned in the Westchester Patriarchs book, as being 'of Salem', will dated 20-Sep-1782, proved 18-Apr-1783, marr. Mary ? and had Daniel (d. bef. 1782) and Thankful (also d. bef. 1782), m. ? Keeler (not sure if that means Thankful or Daniel Sr.). Daniel's will references a James Canfield, likely as son or close relative.

Notes from Canfied Researchers, as compiled mostly by Davida Mathey (with whom I've not yet had direct contact to 'source' the data), indicate the following ancestry for Cornelius: (currently listed in database, this way, however, indications are, from Lewisboro Town Clerk, that David was father of Cornelius who married Rebeckah Dann. Awaiting confirmation.

Died 9/1/1813, in 75th year. That would place his birth year circa 1738, which may indicate that a Cornelius existed in a previous generation, and may be directly related. It's surely a different month and day from records I've seen, so do not suspect it is merely an incorrect transcription, though that possibility also exists, considering the condition of the stones in Beck's Hill, from that timeframe. He was born circa 1770 at Lewisboro/Salem, Westchester, New York, USA. He was the son of Jabez Canfield and Mary Hannah Dikeman. Cornelius Canfield married Rebecca (Dann) Dan, daughter of Abraham Dann and Rebecca Ruscoe, on 29 November 1792 at Church Of Christ, Salem, Westchester, New York, USA. Cornelius Canfield died in 1843. He died on 4 September 1845 at Salem, Westchester, New York, USA.
