'The Eldred Family is a very ancient English Family, and one of only a few English Families that can trace their ancestry back to the early Saxon settlers from the European mainland. Although today members of the Family are found in England, America, Canada, the West Indies, South Africa and Australia, records of the family reach for more than 12 centuries back into the past. Numbers of Eldreds are named in the Doomsday Book of William the Conqueror, compiled in 1086 A.D., and others are named in records here and there during the following centuries, but the oldest record that can be authentically connected to living members of the Family, is the death record of one John Eldred, of Corby, Lincolnshire, England.

The will of John Eldred was written in Latin and is filed at Bury St. Edmonds. It was dated 17 Jan 1489 and was proven April 9, 1489. John's parentage is unknown and details concerning his life are limited to data extracted from his will. It seems likely that the elderly John was living with one of his children at the time of his death. They had moved from Corby to Knettishall, a little hamlet in the very northwest corner of Suffolk County, England, a distance of some 60 miles, which was a substantial trek in those days. The reason for the move is unknown. John's will gives his age as 'well past the year of man by the roods of Books'. This means that he was more than 70 and would place his birth sometime before 1419. Four sons and two daughters are named in the will, but not a wife, whose name is unknown. She had probably died earlier.

Some of his grandchildren lived in New Buckenham, Norfolk. Later generations lived in Ipswich, Norfolk, and still later generations lived in London. ' He was born before 1419 at Corby, Lincolnshire, England. He died on 9 April 1489.

Josiah Conant Davis Not sure how accurate the family history I've seen on this group actually is, as there is listed amongst Josiah's siblings, a Druscilla. Perhaps, before the mother of Amanda was known, Druscilla being listed in the 1860 Census was confusing to the researcher. MAYBE they assumed Druscilla was a daughter of Lydia, rather than a wife of Josiah?

Then again, not to be 'out there', but she MAY have been both! *YIKES, if the SAME!*... Children of Ephraim and Lydia listed under Ephraim, in notes section, so as not to confuse the issue.

Listed as 'J. C. Davis' on Amanda's marriage listing. Have also seen him listed in SOME sources as David. Given the NHVR mention of J.C, and census records for Josiah, believe Josiah is proper listing.

'Our' Josiah appears single in 1850 US Census for Croydon, Sullivan Co, NH. Others are present, but the 'fits' don't pan out.

1910 Census of Cornish, Sullivan County, shows the CORNISH Josiah married to Amy, and still, come 1920, in same community, at age 90, married to Amy, age 50. This is NOT, repeat NOT Josiah Conant. This other Josiah was son of Jesse Davis,and appears in Cornish as early as 1850 Census. He was born in February 1826 at Epsom or Sunapee, New Hampshire, USA. He was the son of Ephraim Davis and Lydia Locke. Josiah Conant Davis married Druscilla UNKNOWN circa 1850 at New Hampshire, USA. Josiah Conant Davis died between 1900 and 1910 at New Hampshire, USA.

Since listed as 5/4 in 1900, this leaves two children, one was Maria, COULD the other have been Winifred, and she's just not in the house at time of 1870 Census? She's have been the oldest, as she'd be 6 or 7 in 1870. There could even be another not listed, as one of the two daughters above MIGHT have been the one who was not living in 1900??? Either way you slice it, it comes up 'long shot'.
