Bertel (Berthel) Iversen Ganderup was naturalized; Worker in Felt Factory. He Originally had birthdate as 11-Aug-1838, in Nustrup, Denmark. However, based on 1920 Census age of 70, that's about 10 years off. The 1838 birth date was likely a son of same name to same parents who died at a young age (in 1839). Another date came from a fellow researcher, indicating a birth of 24-Jun-1849 in Kastrup, Denmark (source record is baptismal record from church).
We KNOW the Berthel born 1838 is not right for two reasons.
NOTE: Because of 10 year gap in births, suspect Christina and John may have been born to first wife, and the remainder of the children to Anna. Another 'theory' is that Berthel was married in Denmark, to his first wife, and married Anna, after arriving in the US... JUST a theory!!! Also, first three children born in NY, remainder in CT, which could be another consideration on the split of children to respective mothers.
Gandrups in Norwalk, CT, are ALL from Denmark.
Berthel Gandrup appears as age 70 in the 1920 Census, his listing is just below a John Gandrup, age 31, his son.
Only Gandrups in 1920 Census in Connecticut are in Norwalk. (1920 U.S. Census, Connecticut, Fairfield, Norwalk, ED# 148) They are Berthel, age 70, b. Denmark, and son John, age 31, b. New York. Both male heads of households, living next door to one another on New Canaan Avenue. John was married to ?Cora B.?, age 27, b. Connecticut. John was a carpenter and Berthel a 'helper' in a the Felt Factory. Berthel MAY prove to be Christine's father. John is SURELY Berthel's son. Listed with Berthel are his wife, Anna M, age 56, also born in Denmark (both arr 1880, nat. 1885, though Anna MAY have been 1883 and 1885, respectively - very blurry), Ernest (21) b. NY, Easter or Esther (19) b. CT, Frederick (16) b. CT, Ruth M. (14) b. CT. It appears that the family moved from NY to CT, right around the turn of the century.
The name Gandrup is exclusively Danish in origins.
Son: Soren I Gandrup - lived in Greenwich, CT, died 9-Aug-1958, age 77. Wife's name was Georgiana M. ? (d. 27-Jun-1953 age 67) . (source - CT Death Index)

From Martin Bjarklev:
After years of searching, a kind friend checked the Manhattan death index for 1905, found the death of the wife at Bellevue Hospital, obtained her death certificate and traced her grave to Kensico Cemetery where she is buried in Lot C, range 5, grave 169, under the name Anna Gandroupe.
Carl Valdemar Gandrup, born 5/13/1880 in Nykobing, Denmark, departed Denmark, on 12/2/1903, aboard the 'Hellig Olav' bound for a new life in America. He left his wife, Anna Christina Gandrup, born 12/25/1881, and his little daughter, Leonora Christina Gandrup, born 8/28/1900, in Denmark. Carl settled in New York and sent for his family the following year. On 11/2/1904, Anna and young Leonora departed Denmark aboard the 'Oscar II' bound for New York. By January 1905 Anna was in Bellevue Hospital with typhoid fever and TB. She died on 3/11/1905 and is apparently buried at Kensico. Their latest known address is 1905: 222 E 11 st in N.Y.
Only other Gandrup listed as arriving at Ellis Island is Petrine, female, arriving as a US Citizen in 1892, aged 21, residing in NY.

In 1925 Norwalk City Directory, the following members of this family are listed:

Gandrup, Frederick I - carpenter - New Canaan Ave
John (Cora) - carpenter - Bartlett Ave

After Berthel's first wife, Karen, died during childbirth, Berthel (sometimes seen as 'B. Iversen Gandrup') invited Karen's sister, Anna, to join him in the US, and to become his wife. QUESTION: Was he already living in the US and sent for her? Or, had he decided to go to the US but to bring with him, Anna, as his wife? See below, for the answer:

Since Berthel emigrated in 1880, he either left a pregnant wife in Denmark, (Karen), who then came over with Soren, or, they came together in 1880 and Soren was born in the US. Either way, it would seem, unless there was much travelling back and forth, that the dau. Annie was born, and died, in the US. Karen must have died in the US, in 1883.
Now that we know Berthel and Karen 'Jar' came over in 1880, she MUST have died on US soil, probably in NY, before moving to CT? Here are there entries for the ship 'Anchoria':

Their arrival before 1892, is why no record on Ellis Island. Their departure from Glasgow may be the reason they don't appear on the Danish Emigration site.

GRAM PARISH CHURCH RECORDS
Page 26 nr. 32 1849
24-Jun-1849
Bertel Iversen Ganderup
Baptized in Gram church 9-Sep-1849
Father: Tennant Søren Hansen Ganderup
Mother: Christine Meier of Kastrup (village in Gram parish)
Witnesses are: Farmer: Iver Lunds wife Gunder Marie in Brundelund. Tennant Peder Meier of Aalkjær. Bertel Iversen Meier of Brundelund (NB: Peder Meier must be family of the mother - Bertel Iversen Meier too. And this is why Bertel is called Iversen. This is highly unusual. His fathers name would have had to be Iver, if they would follow the normal Danish patronymics rules...)
SPECIAL NOTE: Haderslev may also be seen as Hadersleben, depending on whether or not records are Danish or German, I suppose. It's often seen as Hadersleben in German records, at least.
In the family plot at Riverside Cemetery is a grave for 'Baby' Gandrup, who was born and died on 19-May-1929, likely a son, but, no indication of to what couple he might have been born. He was born on 24 June 1849 at
Kastrup, Denmark. He was the son of
Søren (Sören) Hansen Ganderup and
Kirstine Berthelsdatter Meier. Bertel (Berthel) Iversen Ganderup was baptized on 9 September 1849 at
Gram Parish Church, Haderslev County, Denmark. He married
Karen Jensdatter Kjerkegaard, daughter of
Jens Christensen Kirkegaard and
Ane Margrethe Frese, on 8 May 1880 at
Eltang Church, Haderslev, Denmark. Bertel (Berthel) Iversen Ganderup married
Anna Margarethe Kjerkegaard, daughter of
Jens Christensen Kirkegaard and
Ane Margrethe Frese, in 1883 at
USA (or Denmark... depending). Bertel (Berthel) Iversen Ganderup died on 24 October 1922 at
Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA, at age 73. He was buried on 24 October 1922 at
Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk, Connecticut, USA.
