Probably born between 1860 and 1870, sometime, and married in the 1890's, perhaps. Was a tug boat captain in New York Harbor. Indications are that at least one child was born on the tug boat (Anne/Anna), indicating the family may have lived on the boat, and, therefore, that any of the children may have been born 'afloat.' Thomas and Olivia divorced at some point between 1904 and 1908, and Thomas appears to have brought Anna and Nils back to Norway with him, for a short (4-6 year) period of time. They lived in Flekkefjord, during that time, receiving some schooling there. Arnold/Thomas, the youngest child was POSSIBLY brought back to Norway, THEN, back to Minneapolis, with his mother Olava, appearing in the Wisconsin 1920 Census, before returning to the east coast of the US.

Thomas R. Nilsen, buried at Riverside Cemetery in Norwalk. He died 9-Sep-1921 at age 55 years, 7 months and 4 days, which would put his birth at 05-Feb-1866. There's an interesting bit here, because in 1920 US Census for Wisconsin, Olava (Olivia in Census) listed herself as a widow. We know they were no longer together, and in this Thomas R. Nilsen burial record, he's listed as 'married'. Copy of Death Certificate obtained Nov-2004 indicates this IS the right Thomas, with Mrs. Anna Berglund making 'the return' on the original. Listed him as 'Sailor', b. Norway. And, yes, even on death certificate, indicates he was married. Maybe he and Olava were merely separated all those years??? Perhaps, when listed as 'widow', it was merely because she was not WITH her husband?

He Listed as a 'boarder' on County Street in Norwalk (District 169 of 1930 US Census), aged 65, 'wd' which may have also been used for 'divorced', occupation, like that of his son, listed as Landscaper/Gardener. Born in CT, father NY, mother Ireland (unknown county). Also mentions he was 25 at time of marriage. Although a couple of years off on age, it would correlate with the marriage, as well. As he was a couple of years off, in the same direction, with that date, too.

Listed as aged 37 years when Laura was born, which would make his birth year 1872, vice 1863 (this is quite a difference, and causes some concern, though it could have been 47 years, just entered incorrectly. Awaiting further information to make a SOLID determination on our wonderful ALVA!!!

Family resided on Carter Street when Laura was born. Seems they were there for quite some time, though it's now been replaced by a development, they lived near their employer, a very large nursery in that area, Hoyt's Nursery.

May have actually died in New Canaan, but is buried in Lewisboro/Vista... at Beck's Hill. He was born between 3 February 1863 and 1865 at New Canaan, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA. He was the son of Alva (Alba) Canfield and Mary (Hard?) Card. Alva S. Canfield married Carrie Emma Tripp, daughter of Sylvester Richmond Tripp and Hannah Roxanna Hawley, on 15 June 1887. Alva S. Canfield married Christina M. Gandrup, daughter of Bertel (Berthel) Iversen Ganderup and Anna Margarethe Kjerkegaard, circa 1905. Alva S. Canfield and Christina M. Gandrup were divorced before 1920 at Connecticut, USA. Alva S. Canfield died in 1933 at Lewisboro, Westchester County, New York, USA.

The MAIN concern, here, is the age at marriage. If it's age at FIRST marriage, for both of them, then that works out, and fits with the names of the children as recorded. It also explains the disparity, as her marriage = @1906 and his = @1895. Based on children, that looks very good for her marriage to Alvah, but not Louis.

'Christiana' appears in US Census for 1900 in New Canaan, Connecticut, as age 16, a servant in the home of Richard and Clara King. This shows her birthdate as 16-Apr-1884, born in New York. The occupation listed for Mr. King was 'capitalist'.

She is listed with her father and mother, in 1920 Census, carrying the name Canfield, w/ children Laura and Alva. Her marital status is listed as 'D', indicating divorced from Alva(h).

Place of birth as Port Chester from her daughter's B.C. Her married name was Wheeler. Her married name was Canfield. Given the disparity with 1930 US Census, showing him as 54, b. NY, fa: NY, mo: NY, m-19 (not years ago). This still doesn't perfectly match the 1873 year of birth on grave marker. But it's also not enough to believe Louis J. Wheeler, who married Harriet 'Hattie' and had Phillip, is NOT the same man as 'our' Louis A. Wheeler.


No decent fits in 1920 US Census. One, in Bristol, Louis A. Wheeler, age 38, (works with 1873 date), a realty company manager, NY, NY, NJ!!! *sigh*.
Shows him married to Carolyn (age 35, b. NY) , with sons Edward (age 8, b. OH) and Dwight (age 3, b. CT).

THAT matches the 1873 year of birth (though still no match in 1880 Census, so far). There is a Lewis Wheeler, age 7, b. NY, parents b. NY, listed in Georgia!! His younger two siblings were born in GA, but older two b. NY. A possibility, albeit a slim one.

Interestingly enough, though likely NOT related, there WAS a Louis A. Wheeler, b. 16-Jun-1927, died 27-Aug-1999 in San Bernadino, CA. He couldn't possibly be the son of 'our' Louis A. though, as he would have appeared in the 1930 Census record, as well. He does appear in records for the town of Litchfield. He was also a USAF CMSgt!      Nils Nilsen Nils, apparently (according to family 'lore') lived most of his adult life in the Carolinas, and kept the Nilson/Nielson/Neilson spelling of the name, according to his nephew, Arnold Thomas Nelson. Though, at one time, listed an Allen Nelson as son, the Berglund sisters indicated Nils only had two children, both daughters, Jean and Sarah.

Not sure what the translation is, but John lists Nils' occupation as: SJØMANN (now believe - Oct-2004 - this could be Seaman/Sailor). Both McClellanville and Awendaw are in Charleston County, along the coast, about 10 miles apart.
