Ernest N. Helgeson was buried at Forestdale Cemetery, Malden, Massachusetts, USA. He First husband. Ernie and Helen were the best friends of Meredith and Louise, for MANY years. They were all avid Pinnochle players. The story was, when the last of the four passed away, they were to bring a complete Pinnochle deck with them. When Helen was buried, my brother, Nathan, made sure she did not leave this Earth without that deck of cards.

Surely, they have a reserved card table 'up there.'

Pop-up Pedigree

Gordon (Geza Kiss) Kish Born in Hungary as Geza Kiss, he took on the anglicized version (Gordon Kish) by the request of his wife, Regina. Resided Norwalk, Connecticut, USA (SSN: 043-05-7658) Birthdate on SSN Record is 1-Aug-1905 (though have heard it as 11-Aug, as well). Born 1902, according to the 1930 Census. His birth month was surely August, and at least in the first 11 days. The year remains even more questionable after reading the ship manifest for the ship he arrived on in 1923, which reads (paraphrased) as follows:

Geza Kiss arrived in the US on 12-Oct-1923, arriving on the 'S.S. Berengaria' departing from Cherbourg, Manche, France on 6-Oct-1923. He was listed as 16 years of age. His passage had been prepaid by his father, Gabriel (Gabor), who resided at 948 Worden Avenue in Bridgeport, Connecticut, at the time. He was 5 foot 11 inches, with brown hair and grey eyes. His place of birth on the ship's manifest is listed as Hajperladhaz, Hungary. His occupation, at 16, was listed as Locksmith. His last permanent residence in Hungary was listed as Hajduhadhaz. He listed as his nearest relative remaining in Hungary, his uncle, Mr. Michael Bata in Hajduhadhaz, and his final destination as Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Debrecen is a town of Hungary, capital of the county of Hajdú-Bihar, it is the 2nd or 3rd largest city in the country. It is 143 miles east of Budapest.

He died, according to his burial record, of cardiac arrest at age 73 (which would put his birth year closer to 1906 than 1902. Something to consider.

His obituary (accompanying his burial record) reads as follows:

Gordon Kish - Norwalk:
Gordn Kis of 20 Columbine Lane, husband of Regina Bayliss Kish, died Thursday morning in the Norwalk Hospital.
Born in Hungary, son of the late Gabor and Susan Gargya Kish, he had been a local resident since 1924. He was a retired machinest, having been associated with Burndy Corporation for many years and a member of the East Norwalk Yacht Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Vivian) Nelson of Norwalk and Mrs. William (Doris) Robison of Oceanside, Calif; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.'

Services were conducted by Rev. Zolatan Szabo paster of the Hungarian Reformed Church.

He was the son of Gabriel (Gabor) 'Gabe' Kiss and Susan Gargya. Gordon (Geza Kiss) Kish emigrated in 1923. Pop-up Pedigree

Susan (Zsuzsánna Nagymáté) Nagy married Stephen Szabo, son of Mr. Szabo and Mrs. Szabo, Cir 1903-1904 at Connecticut, USA. Susan (Zsuzsánna Nagymáté) Nagy Zsuzsanna is Hungarian name from which 'Susan' is derived. She is listed as 44 in 1920 US Census for Norwalk, CT. Living with Stephen and listed as 'Susie' (same as 1930 Census). According to 1920 Census, she and he both arrived in the US in 1900 and are listed in 1920 as 'Aliens'. This contradicts the marriage in 1898 of Susan and Albert Balazs, though she MAY have gone back to Hungary, sometime before Albert died??? A tad odd. William is no longer with Susan in 1920, but Regina 17, Grace 14 and Stephen 9, are all living at the Szabo home in 1920. It LOOKS like they lived at #5 'Lubrans' Place??? Hard to make out the actual word. The 1930 Census for 'Stephen Sabo' and family, bears out that 'Susie' arrived in 1894, and Stephen in 1903, which falls in better 'line' with known family history on the Bayliss/Balazs connection.

Her obituary read as follows (though MY copy is quite smudged, I read what I could off the original cutting, which was also smudged):

'Mrs. Suzanna Szabo, age 90 of 69 Fort Point, wife of the late Stephen Szabo, native of Hungary resided Norwalk 75 years. She was a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church, of which she was one of the organizersof the Ladies Aid Society, the William Penn Society and the Reformed Federation of America. She is survived by sons William Bayliss and Stephen Szabo, Jr., daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Regina) Kish and Grace Gustafson, as well as two brothers, Joseph Nagy and Stephen Nagy, both of Norwalk, eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.' Her married name was Szabo. Her married name was Balazs. She was born on 28 March 1878 at Fony, Abaujmegye, Hungary. She was the daughter of Jozsef Nagymate and Clara Elizabeth (Erzsebet) Szoke. Susan (Zsuzsánna Nagymáté) Nagy emigrated circa 1894 from Hungary to USA. She married Albert (Bertalan) Balazs, son of Joseph Balazs and Elizabeth (Erzsebet) Bencs, on 19 February 1898 at South Norwalk, Connecticut, USA. Susan (Zsuzsánna Nagymáté) Nagy died on 11 April 1967 at Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA, at age 89. She was buried on 13 April 1967 at Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk, Connecticut, USA.

Albert (Bertalan) Balazs was buried at Pine Island Cemetery, Norwalk, Connecticut, USA. He was naturalized; Laborer. He Bertalan is Hungarian name from which Albert is derived. Albert died only 7 months after Regina was born. Though she, apparently, was never adopted by Mr. Szabo. He died of pneumonia and heart failure. He lived at 18 Bouton Street in South Norwalk. Information on his death certificate was provided by Steve/Stevi Balazs of South Norwalk. Undertaker was D.W. Raymond. He was buried in Pine Island Cemetery.

The John Balazs buried with William Bayliss and Eva Fazekas, may well be Albert's brother, as he was born @1879. It makes sense, but, nothing solid, as yet.

1900 US Census for Norwalk, CT, residing at 26 Bonton/Bouton Street:

'BOLLAZ':

Oliver, son, w, m, Aug-1897, 2, S, CT, Hun, Hun, none

Now... Is Oliver, William? Perhaps, William Oliver, or Oliver William Bayliss???

Gabriel (Gabor) 'Gabe' Kiss (M)
b. circa 1880

Gabriel (Gabor) 'Gabe' Kiss Gabriel was his anglicized name, he was likely born 'Gabor'. MAY and this is a major stretch, have arrived in US in 1905, aboard the Vaderland, from Antwerp, Belgium, on 17-May-1905. If so, was 42 years of age and came as a Laborer, to join his brother (or father??) The brother's name LOOKS like it could be Layslar Kiss??? or Fayslar? First lettery L/F, second o/a, third y, fourth s/o, fifth l, sixth a/o, last r/n. If right Gabriel, then this brother/father lived at 1113 Main Street in Braddock (no state given). Listing does indicate Gabriel was married at the time. Whether correct or not, under 'Race or People' he's listed as German, under last residence, it reads 'Mazao' or 'Magao'. Under 'Nationality - (Country of which citizen is a subject) he lists Hungary.

1930 US Census for Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut, residing at 948 Worden Avenue, the following Kish family members:

Kish, Gabriel, head, paying $12/month rent, owned a radio, M, W, 49, M-18, Hun, Hun, Hun, arr: 1905, Al, molder at a steel mill.
Kish, Elizabeth, wife, F, W, 45, M-29, Hun, Hun, Hun, arr: 1914, Laborer at a factory
Kish, Alexander, son, M, W, 30, S, Hun, Hun, Hun, arr: 1908, molder at a steel mill

Suspect Elizabeth may be wife other than Susan??? Her first marriage at age 29, and arrival 6 years after Alexander make little sense. Also, since Gabriel was first married at 18, that would have been 31 years prior (@1899). Some concerns, here. It would also have meant that Alexander was born when she was only 15, which doesn't make it impossible, but, at the least, unlikely Elizabeth was his mother. Believe Gabe and Elizabeth married, it would seem, just AFTER Alexander was born. Could Susan have died in childbirth? Possibility surely exists.

Likely THIS Gabor listed in 1920 US Census for Bridgeport, CT, as married, but living w/o family, as a boarder, age 40, arr: 1905/Al, b. Hungary. He was born circa 1880 at Hungary. He married Susan Gargya in 1899 at Hungary?. Gabriel (Gabor) 'Gabe' Kiss married Elizabeth UNKNOWN circa 1914 at USA.

Thomas Arnold Nelson (M)
b. 8 February 1904, d. May 1969
Pop-up Pedigree

Thomas Arnold Nelson was buried at Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan, Connecticut, USA. He Born in New York, (either the 6th or 8th of February 1904) shortly before his parents divorced. He moved with his mother, POSSIBLY back to Norway, first, but, surely by 1920, was living with her in Bayfield City, Wisconsin, and working as a Farm Laborer. Thomas A. Nelson, Son, Male, White, 15 years old, Single, had not attended school since Sep-1919 but could read & write, born in New York, both father and mother born in Norway, working as a Farm Laborer for a 'Private Party', for wages.
Based on Laura Canfield being from Connecticut, I would assume he and Laura met in the early to mid 1920's, got married about mid 1920's in Connecticut.

In 1930 Census, Connecticut, Fairfield, Norwalk, District 154 , Enumerated on 11-Apr-1930, at what LOOKS like #4 Franklin Street:
Thomas A. Nelson, Head, Renter - 22.50/month, age 26, marr at 23, b. NY, Nor, Nor, Roofer for a roofing company.
Laura Nelson, wife, 21, marr at 17, b. CT, CT, NY,
Arnold T. Nelson, son, 2yrs 11m, b. CT, NY, CT,

Based on above, ESTIMATED marriage date of 1926. No matter how one works the numbers, it just doesn't make any sense that Thomas was 23 and Laura 17. Her birthday came just after his, in February. The enumeration was in April. With most dates, though, MY bet is on the woman. Especially knowing the Nelson men! So, would think Laura was more accurate with age of 17 at marriage, and that Thomas may have been 24 vice 23?

According to SSDI, the following is recorded:

LAURA E NELSON
SSN 049-16-8435 Residence: 06382 Uncasville, New London, CT
Born 27 Feb 1909 Last Benefit:
Died 11 Jun 1992 Issued: CT (Before 1951)

After receiving Laura Canfield's SSAN application, it appears her birthdate was 13-Feb-1909, by her own account. She was born in New Canaan, CT. In 1942, when applied, she lived at 24 Merwin Street in Norwalk, CT. She listed her parents as Alva Canfield and Christine Gangrup... though as it was typed by someone else, the second 'g' MAY be in error. As of 5-Aug-1942, when applied for, she worked at the Character Novelty Co. at 14 S. Main St., S. Norwalk, CT. Of interesting note, the pull-down listing for Laura in the SSDI showed a 27-Feb birthdate, whereas the application shows 13-Feb.

Birth Cert. shows 27th, so leaving as is. Also shows father's name as Alva S. Canfield, so not sure where the 'R' ever came from, at this point. Mother's name listed as Christina on Laura's B.C.

Marriage certificate in Norwalk City Hall, indicates she was 18 at time of marriage, but she was only 17. Was this a mistake? Might she have lied to get married w/o parental permission? Or, was that even law in 1926? Her married name was Nelson. She was born on 27 February 1909 at New Canaan, Connecticut, USA. She was the daughter of Alva S. Canfield and Christina M. Gandrup. Laura Emily Canfield married Thomas Arnold Nelson, son of Tønnes (Thomas) Regenius Nilsen and Olava Antonie (Ingebretsen) Ingebretsdatter, on 14 August 1926 at Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA. Laura Emily Canfield died on 11 June 1992 at Norwich, Connecticut, USA, at age 83.
