Ike HANDSPIKER

[866]

ABOUT 1862 - 29 Mar 1937

Family 1 : Emma ?

INDEX

[866] Ike and Emma are listed in the 1920 Census for Mallorys, Wilkes County, Georgia, USA as "colored" with a stepson John (Ordister?) aged 14. To date, I've found no extensive records on this family, except the Georgia Death Records and the 1920 Census Records. Two other women who MAY be related to this family, as they also appear in Georgia records and on their death records, their race is listed as "C" (for "Colored") are listed, below:

Mary J Handspiker b. About 1889-1890, d. 12-Feb-1954 in Wilkes County, Georgia
Laura H. Handspiker b. 10-Aug-1901 d. 28-Oct-1994 in Rayle, Wilkes County, Georgia
Sherry Handspiker b. About 1905 or 14-Aug-1914 d. 23-Oct-1974 in Fulton County, Georgia
(Of interesting note.. Sherry is listed in the Georgia Death Index as a male. Whether or not that is correct is yet to be uncovered. It would seem an unusual name for a son). Further info from SSDI, is as follows: Sherry Handspiker 260-14-2009, b. 14-Aug-1914 d. Oct-1974. Some obvious confusion on dates of birth, here, as he/she was listed as aged 69, at date of death in the Georgia index.
I've no clue how this family chose the name Handspiker, unless, possibly, Ike had lived in Canada in his early days, possibly worked for a Handspiker? Or, possibly, could have adapted the name, simply from something as simple as working on the railroad, and his main job was driving in the spikes? No way of telling without some SERIOUS research!

Upon discussion of this particular group, another researcher offered up yet another explanation for the Handspiker surname for Ike and family. Apparently, it was known for some slaves to assume surnames of soldiers who were either instrumental in their freedom, or, who they happened across after finding themselves free and no longer wishing any "ties" with those who once owned them. Though it was not an oft seen practice, it is known to have happened, and in some cases has been documented.

SSDI Info:

Information from 1930 Census for Handspiker in GA. All "new" names, from above:

Irvin District, Wilkes County, GA, US Census for 1930, District 9, page 16:

Handspipker, Charlie, Head, male negro, aged 68 marr. age ?? b. GA F.b. GA M.b. GA - Farmer
" , Meaty, wife, female negro, aged 55, marr. age 26 (makes NO SENSE), b. GA F. GA. M GA.
Bardester/Barckster?, Annie, dau. fem. nego aged 27, marr age 18 GA/GA/GA
Faust, Will E., Grandson, male negro age 16, single GA/GA/GA
Handspiker, Geo. Brother, male negro age 82, widow, marr age 25 GA/GA/GA
Handspiker, Fred, son (not sure if of Geo. or Charlie), male negro age 28, single GA/GA/GA
(above grouping residing at Abode 153 in "Washington ED 1W")

That's the first grouping, but another Handspiker on same page is Wade:
Handspiker, Wade, head, male negro age 29, single GA/GA/GA (Abode 156 in "Washington ED 1W")

I've no real guesses on how this group relates to Ike. Just that based on location, they are likely kinfolk of some kind. I could venture a guess that George and Charlie were either his cousins or brothers, if blood relatives. With info provided on Charlie and "Meaty", the marriage date is impossible to determine. Based on her age, and age of Annie, I would venture that they were married between 1890 and 1896, sometime.

Also found in 1880 US Census for Georgia, a Margeret Handspiker, b. @ 1855, a servant in the home of Nace Scott, in Thomson, Mcduffie, Georgia. (National Archives Film T9-0156; Page 406D)

Additionally in the 1930 Census for Georgia, found the spelling as Hanspiker for a Lewis, aged 21 and his wfe, Lauonie, aged 18, in Irvin, Wilkes, County.

There is surely enough information to consider building a family tree specific to Ike and his descendants/relatives. It's just that there are also enough pieces missing to make that a very difficult task, at this point (Dec-2002).

Georgia Marriage Records, 1794-1902, Warren County, shows a Charles Handspiker marr: Nancy Richardson, 31-Dec-1885, in Warren, Gerogia. Could be same family group.

Though hardly readable, on the 1910 US Census for Wilkes County's Militia District, Georgia, is listed at least one, possibly two Calvin Hanspikers (note no "d"), one Calvin, age 40, wife Harriet, age 45, marr @1895, children: Tom, age 18, B??? (dau), age 16, ?Tad?, age 12?, Al??n (dau), age 8?, a son, age 5, a dau, age ? and the other Calvin, age 41 - with wife, Harriet, age 40, married @1892. One man, two wives? Hard tellin'!

Also found in same source as above, on a different page, in "Newtown District", the family of Isaac Hanspiker:
Hanspiker, Isaac, Head, B, M, May-1870, 30, M-10, GA, GA, GA, Farmer
Hanspiker, Lizzie, wife, B, F, Aug-1874, 26, M-10, 3/3, GA, GA, GA,
Hanspiker, Ora, dau, B, F, May-1893, 7, S, GA,
Hanspiker, Roxie, dau, B, F, May-1894, 6, S, GA,
Hanspiker, David, son, B, M, Sep-1899, 8/12, S, GA,

There are two sisters-in-law to Isaac listed, as well, but the surname is difficult to figure.. Possibly Cader or Cade, Mary (listed as a farm laborer) and Mollie, 14 and 7, respectively. Believe this is an indication that Lizzie's maiden name was Cader or Cade.

1870 US Census for Thomaston, Upson, Georgia, lists:
Hanspiker, Martha, 30, F, B, Farm Hand
Hanspiker, Susan, 13, F, B, Farm Hand
Hanspiker, Delia, 9, F, B, Farm Hand

A true find, the following historical record may, eventually, help shed more light on the Handspikers of Georgia. Note that "Stephen Handspiker" is listed amongst the "first settlers" of Lincoln County, GA (after it split from Wilkes County, GA), and the county of Lincoln was created in 1796, so that means Stephen was likely there, at LEAST in the early 1800s! Was Stephen of the Canadian Handspiker family? Was he a slave owner? More to be uncovered in this very mysterious "branch" of the family.

LINCOLN COUNTY, GEORGIA

This county was laid out from Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1796, and named in honour of Major-General Benjamin Lincoln. The Savannah River separates the county from South Carolina, Broad River from Elbert, and Little River from Columbia County.

LINCOLNTON is the county town, situated upon the waters of Soap Creek, distant 90 miles N. E. from Milledgeville.

Among the first settlers of this county were, Thomas Murray, Robert Walton, John Lockhart, B. Lockhart, Thos. Mitchell, Sterne Simmons, J. Stovall, Captain John Lamar, Stephen HANDSPIKER, M. Henley, Robert Fleming, James Wallace, Peter Lamar.

Reply from historical researcher in Lincoln County:

Re: Stephen Handspiker - A founder of Lincoln County, GA

In Reply to: Stephen Handspiker - A founder of Lincoln County, GA by: Jared Handspicker
"Stephen Haernsburger is referenced the tax records of 1801-02 for Lincoln County. In the book, Lincoln County Genealogy and History there are several deeds for Stephen Harnsburger and his wife Mary for early 1800s. Also, Stephen Harnsberger was given a tavern license in August 1797. He was listed on the militia muster list for 1814. There are still Harnsberger/Harnesberger descendants living in Lincoln County today. The name has been spelled many different ways. This is very probably the person referenced in the book. I have not ever seen the name of Handspiker in Lincoln County records."

Hanspiker, Calvin (genealogy.com) found listed as 40 and/or 41 in Wilkes
County, GA in 1910 (b. @1870)

Hanspiker, Fanny, Shelby County, KY, age 18 in 1870 US Census.

Hanspiker, Isaac, Newtown, Wilkes Co., GA, US 1900 Census, age 30 (b. May-
1870), farmer. Wife, Lizzie, b. Aug-1874 (marr: @1890), Ora, dau, May-1893,
Roxie, dau, May-1894, David, son, Sep-1899.
There is also a Mary J. Cade, listed as "sister in law" and a Mollie Cade,
same. Their b.d.'s are Dec-1885 and Dec-1892, respectively. Would lead one to
believe Ora was born Ora Cade.

Possibly a younger brother, on same census page, Willis Cade, b. Apr? 1879.

1870 US census for Thomaston, Upson Co., GA shows:
Martha Hanspiker, age 30, Farm hand, daughters, Susan (13) and Delia (9).

A more complete list from Jean Strand, also of Seattle:

Earle C. Hanselpacker was a bookkeeper, a manufacturers' agent and had his own building materials business and was not a lawyer.

The next available directory she has is 1981, and they do not appear in that one.
-------------------------------------

Given the above, he was married to an Elma, Elna, Elinea or Alma, as the residential listings include that name. Since he was born 1890, and was married before 1920, one might assume he was married before he appears in Seattle area?

Still curious about Eugene, Oregon, since he died there in 1965, but was obviously still a resident of Seattle. Perhaps, he was at a hospital, there.

NOTE: I have had NO luck finding this couple in 1920 or 1930 US Census records for Washington OR Oregon!
