Hiram D. FERRIS

[559]

22 Feb 1854 - 15 Nov 1924

Family 1 : Tirza (Terzah or Tursay) HANSELPACKER
  1.  Nellie FARRIS
  2.  Cora FARRIS
Family 2 : Florence N. POWERS
  1.  John Gordon FERRIS

INDEX

[559] from Waterborough, Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. Witness to marriage: John G. Cosman? In Queens County Marriage register, shows witnesses as Peter McIntyre and D. Dykeman.

A David Farris, possibly David H. Farris, shows up in the 1901 Census, married to a woman whose name appears to be Thursey (VERY close to Tursay). The Census of Cambridge in the "Sunbury & Queens" district, on page 5 (I believe). It shows approx six children in the family, but I found no readable "Cora" or "Nellie". "Thursey" is listed as 38, putting her birthyear to 1863, vice 53. If married in 1874, that would have meant she was 11 at the time, so this is no longer a possibility, unless the Census is proven in drastic error. Same family appears in Johnston Parish in 1891 Queens County Census with her name spelled as Thursa, her age as 26, with children Walter Lee, Willy M., Emerson and Lilly Pearl. The coincidences are too close to rule OUT this family, as yet.

Perhaps David was Hiram's middle name? And, with the others by the same given name, he chose to be called David? Possibility, yes, but needs more research.

Also seen as Ferris.

Not to totally confuse the issue, but, in same 1901 Census listed above (David), there is the following listing for St John County:

Ferris, Hiram D
Birth Place: New Brunswick Age: 47
Census Year: 1901 Location: Saint John City Part 3
Film #: T-6443 Division #: 21-K1
Page #: 33 Entry #: 17
Family #: 368
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
(NOTE: In the above record, the "wife" is Florence Ferris, aged 43, Cora is listed as aged 9, JOHN G. Ferris is listed as aged 1, and Nellie Ferris is listed as 19 - Numbers 18, 19, 20 and 21, respectively)

IF the Hiram D. Ferris in St John in 1901 is correct, eldest daughter might have been born to Tirza, and later children born to Florence? A LOT OF WORK left to sort out this mess!!!

HIRAM D. FERRIS, (M), 15 November 1924, SJ, F18936 Vol. -- #033283 (death record)

Finally found him in 1881 Canada Census for Canning, Queens, New Brunswick, as follows:

H.D. FERRIS M Male Scottish 28 New Brunswick Farmer Baptist
Thressa FERRIS M Female Dutch 28 New Brunswick Baptist
Alberta FERRIS Female Scottish 5 New Brunswick
Warren FERRIS Male Scottish 4 New Brunswick
Lisata FERRIS Female Scottish 4 New Brunswick
Nelly FERRIS Female Scottish <1 Born: Aug; 8/12 New Brunswick

This is the first indication of OTHER children being born to Thursay/etc. However, it would make sense they weren't in 1901 Census. Just need to figure out the 1891 records.

Marriage record for Hiram D. Farris marrying Florence Powers in Saint John in 1898, from the PANB index of marriages, 1887-1926. In same record, the following marriages MAY be for members of this family, as well:

1) Nellie Ferris m. Leland Harris Clark, 1912, VI county in NB.

2) Nellie E. Ferris m. Charles Cronk, 1920 SJ county. NOT same Nellie... dau of different parents.

[611] MAY have died young. Concern with sibling named Luetta, that the 1853 birthdate of Tirzah may have been inadvertently "assigned" to Lucey, due to much confusion on the TWO family theory. AND, that Lucey might have been a nickname for Luetta. Which would explain Lucey missing from the 1871 Census, though she COULD have married off, if date of birth IS hers and correct, she would have been 18 years of age.
