Family legend has it: Thomas Shelley was aboard a wartime ship (Civil War?) On his way from Britain?. He jumped ship 'cause he didn't want to fight. Due to his AWOL/desertion status, he changed his name to Cummings. A tough one!!! IF it is a true story, perhaps the following is at least what the story MIGHT be based on... a rather long shot, I'd say:

IF this record IS correct, than the age is skewed on either military record or Census records. THIS Thomas 'Shelley' was likely born closer to 1832 than 1848. I doubt, even someone who wanted to change their identity would realize the difficulty of shaving 16 years off ones age, being 32, vice 48, in the 1880 Census? However, the information is presented as an entertainment of the possiblity, NOT as any proof of such desertion.

My OWN suspicions (if this legend of deserting a ship is based on fact) is that he was enlisted in the Royal Navy (at a rather young age) and possibly his ship anchored in a major US harbor, at some time during the Civil War, and he jumped ship. It could have been Washington, New York, or Philadelphia, (or some New Jersey port?) as all are close enough to NJ for him to have made it there by 1868 to marry Julia.

In the 1880 Philadelphia census the following is worth looking at as a solid possibility on this line:
Thomas Cummings aged 32 born England residing 232 Willey Street in Philadelphia.
Wife, Julia W. aged 28 born New Jersey, Children: William R. aged 9 born New Jersey.
Edward, aged 7 born Pennsylvania, Walter S. aged 4 born Pennsylvania. Since Edward was born in 1872, this is a possibility. He was the only Thomas Cummings in Philadelphia with a wife named Julia, and no others had sons named Edward. We know that he was born in England, and it is quite possible that Julia's middle initial was 'W' this all puts Thomas as being born 1848 and Julia 1852 in New Jersey.

BORN IN ENGLAND, AND IT IS QUITE POSSIBLE THAT JULIA'S MIDDLE INITIAL WAS 'W'
THIS ALL PUTS THOMAS AS BEING BORN 1848 AND JULIA 1852 IN NEW JERSEY. He was naturalized; Worked in Hosiery Manufacturing. He was born circa 1848 at England. He married Julia W. Pennington on 12 November 1868 at Cumberland County, New Jersey, USA.

Ephraim Murphy Ephraim lived a long life, surely living past age of 90, as we know he was born 1818 or 1819, and alive in 1910 Census. He outlived two wives, possibly a third. As near as I can tell, though, he only had two children by his first wife, Margaret.

In 1840, another Ephraim Murpy appears as HoH in home in Windsor, Kennebec Co, ME. Could this have been his father?

Ephraim Murphy listed in 1910 Census for LaGrange, Penobscot, Maine, as being aged 95, married to his third wife, Lucinda (age 84 and 4th marriage). If so, he and Lucinda were married around 1867, and he was born in Maine, around 1815.

If so, 1880 Census for same location shows 'Ephriam and L.' as 60 and 56, respectively. He was listed as a 'Retail Confectioner.'

All this fits, as he was already in LaGrange as a widower in 1860, with his son, Samuel H. Murphy, living with (brother?) Samuel Murphy (b. @1816), HIS wife, Hannah, b. @1820, and their son Orvil, b. @1851. By 1880, Samuel (brother?) and Hannah had moved to Dover, ME. He was born on 16 January 1818 or 1819 at Maine, USA. He was the son of Mr. Murphy and Mrs. Murphy. Ephraim Murphy married Margaret Jane Hall on 4 June 1843 at Maine, USA. Ephraim Murphy married Diana Bishop on 16 November 1860 at LaGrange, Penobscot County, Maine, USA. Ephraim Murphy died between 1910 and 1920 at Maine, USA.
