Likely already on his own at a young age. Closest possible matches in 1870 indicate he was already working as a farm laborer and no longer residing with family. Attempts to find Jerome in 1860 have proved fruitless (ditto for Mary).

Was single in 1880 US Census for Stafford, Tolland Co, CT, so not yet married to 1st wife at that point, but suspect he married first in CT, between 1880 and 1895. He was born circa 1858 at Stafford Springs, Connecticut, USA. He was the son of Jerome Phillips and Mary A. McFersey. Charles W. Phillips married Hattie (I. or J.) Adams, daughter of William Adams and Sarah W. Whitney, on 8 April 1896 at Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA.

Of possibly the same family, and surely of the same generation, was a Samuel Eldred, who was born 1620 in England, married Elizabeth Miller, in 1640 (possibly in colonies). He died in 1695 in Rhode Island, Elizabeth was born 1622 and died 1711 in RI, as well. Without further research, can only suspect some connection in the families. He was born on 4 September 1627 at England. He was the son of Thomas Eldred and Anna Watson. William Eldredge married Ann Lumpkin, daughter of William Lumpkin and Tamesin ?, on 3 March 1645/46 at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA.
