Minnie S. HANDSPIKER

[1230]

ABOUT 1869 - 11 Jan 1893

INDEX

[1230] One possibility is that Minnie was the daughter of one of the two or three families that settled in Waltham, Massachusetts and environs thereof. More to research to connect her to any family, in the future. Here's my transcription of the articles that appeared in the Digby Courier on 13-Apr-1893 and 26-Jan-1894, regarding the case of Minnie S. (more likely) or J. (less likely) Handspiker:

13-Apr-1893: Appearing in the Boston Journal, 5 April "The Relatives of Dead Girl Caused Investigation"

"Suspicious circumstances." So read the report of Medical Examiner Pinkham in the Autopsy on the death of Minnie J. Handspiker, aged 23, which occurred at Salem (Massachusetts) Jan. 11, and cause quite a sensation.
The report says the young woman died under suspicious circumstances in Salem, and the body, after being embalmed in the ordinary way, was placed in a tomb in Lynn. Complaint having been made to the police by relatives of the dead girl, an investigation was deemed necessary.
The body was therefore taken from the tomb and carried to the undertaking rooms of Haven & McGovern, where an autopsy was held at which it was shown that all the organs of the body were hea??, and that the young woman was about four months advanced in pregnancy. It was evident that an attempt had been made to procure an abortion.
There were no marks of violence and nothing appeared to account for the death.
A chemical examination was ordered, but this, although made in a very careful and thorough manner, also failed to disclose the cause of death. It is extremely probable that death was caused by a large dose of ergot, administered with the purpose of producing an abortion. This substance cannot be with certainty detected by chemical tests. There was, however, in the contents of the stomach a dark colored substance which produced an odor like that of ergot. The girl's lover, a married man, was with her when she was taken ill. His probable complicity in the abortion is shown by the fact that when the investigation was begun he left the country and has not yet returned.

The second article, published in Jan-1894, in the Courier?, reads as follows:

"There is a death mystery in Salem and Lynn just now to which the dailies of Boston are appropriating a great deal of space and which is creating unusual excitement in police circles. The victim is Minnie Handspiker, a pretty DIGBY girl, whose widowed mother now lives in Lynn.

Lynn, Jan 17. - There is a tale of two cities in the Handspiker case.

Minnie S. Handspiker, while residing in Salem, was taken suddenly ill in the house of A. H. Ward, 301 Essex St., where she had lived since Dec. 30, 1892, and died.
Her body was brought to Lynn and given a funeral at her widowed mother's house, 49 Friend Street.
The Lynn police became informed in some manner not explained that there were suspicious circumstances in connection with the girl's death, and proceeded to make an investigation.
Medical examiner J.G. Pinkham of the Lynn district, performed an autopsy on the body. The medical examiner of the Salem district, Dr. Carlton, is alleged to have declined to have anything to do with it.
All the known incidents connected with the girl's death occurred in Salem (Massachusetts), while Lynn seems to be alone concerned in the investigation and prosecution of guilty parties, if there be any.
A seal has been put upon the tongue of every person in the city who is upon the inside of facts in the case. The police, the doctors who performed the autopsy, the undertakers who took the body from the receiving tomb in Pine Grove Cemetery yesterday mornijng, and the dead girls family are uncommunicative as stones. The only person who has talked at all in the city is Mrs. Arthur Braun, the fiery-tempered wife of the man who is just now a very interesting figure in the case.
Parties in Salem have been interviewed with considerable success, however. A. H. Ward, who runs the boarding house in the witch city where Minnie Handspiker, who had lived under the name of Minnie Stevens, was taken sick and died, says that the man Braun was a frequent caller on the girl and was with her at the end.
It was something over a year ago that a sensational story cropped out in this city connecting Arthur Braun and Minnie S. Handspiker in an alleged case of elopement.
An expert examination of portions of the body is now in progress. Marshall Wells left the city early today, and it is believed he went to Boston to place the organs to be examined in the hands of Prof. Wood of Harvard.
There is a strengthening of the theory that poisoning was the cause of the girl's death in this resort to expert examination. Physicians say that a case of malpractice could have been easily determined at the autopsy, whereas poisoning could not be established without chemical tests.
Deputy Neal alluded to some rather significant testimony in the case, though it is of a delicate nature to make public.
Among Salem doctors who were called hurriedly in at the time when Miss Handspiker was dying was Dr. Sarah E. Sherman. Dr. Sherman stated to the deputy today that there was indisputable evidence of the girl's freedom from the condition in which an operation would be necessary.
With this evidence the idea gains ground that Miss Handspikers death WAS CAUSED BY DRUGS administered as an emmenagogue.
Dr. F. Gardner of Salem, who was the fourth and last physician called to attend the dying girl, stated this morning that when he arrived, she was in convulsions and there were indications of ureaic poisoning, a sign of brights disease, though poison taken into the stomach might cause similar symptoms.
If the idea is a tenable one, the question is was the drug administered with criminal intent and by whom, or did the girl take it voluntarily?
In this connection the remark of one of the doctors who performed the autopsy, let fall within hearing of others as he was leaving the undertaker's room where the body key is significant "She may have done it herself." (end of article)

Of note, and for consideration: Isaac N. Hanselpacker and some of his relations have Lynn, Massachusetts connections. Not a Handspiker, however, but may be worth keeping in mind. As Minnie was surely "of Digby" and Isaac had New Brunswick and Hanselpacker connections, the chances of any direct connection as EXTREMELY slim. It's merely the time and geographic proximity that warrants a certain level of caution.
