Edward West died Bef ORE 01-SEP-1677 at
Newcastle, New Hampshire, USA. Reference: GW,HFWEST-1. He 1638/39 birth in Great Island from earliest research. Chances are greatest that the 1643 date is a date he was brought to England to be baptized, rather than a date of birth. However, given the research effort of H. R. West (Westy), may want to consider the possibility that Edward WAS born in England (@1643), and baptized PRIOR to coming to the colonies.
Edward West was an early settler of the area once known as 'Great Island', which became New Castle (or Newcastle) New Hampshire. The area is now a part of Portsmouth, and is a sort of peninsula that juts out from the mainland. Upon the land originally settled by the family is a Fort, close to the original George Walton home.
Edward's father is in dispute, and will likely remain so for the rest of time. My grandmother listed his father, early on, as John West, some other researchers supsect he may have been a son of Francis West (the 'Admiral of New England). I have yet to uncover any solid proof of either connection. Edward was addressed as 'Sergeant' in 1673. One inn, owned by his wife Martha (at her death) was called 'The Anchor'. Westy (and I tend to have more reason to believe this possibility) says there's a decent chance that Edward was the son of John West of Saco, Maine, and his wife, Edith. Edward was believed to be a seaman/mariner. This makes complete sense, given the time and location in which he lived the majority of his life.
In Dec-2003, I received a CD-ROM from Westy. On this CD, he lists Francis West, b. @1621, London, England, as father of Edward. If this is true, it MUST be based on the 1643 birth date (or baptismal date - my own suspicions). He was naturalized; VINTNER/INN KEEPER. He was born circa 1638/39 at
Great Island (now Newcastle), New Hampshire, USA. He was the son of
John West and
Edith ?. Edward West was christened on 3 September 1643 at
St. Giles, Cripplegate, London, England. He married
Martha Walton, daughter of
George Walton and
Alice Hilton, on 22 October 1662 at
Newcastle, New Hampshire, USA.
