Mr. Rolfe Rolfe family was in Wiltshire, England, since at least 1387. This may have been Henry Rolfe or his brother. A Henry was b. about 1515, died in 1558, and had a son Richard and a daughter, Margaret. Richard was the father of Agnes mother of Honor, who was the wife of Henry, who was the uncle of Thomas Whittier b 1620. See 'English Origins Of New England Families', in 3 Vols, NEHGR.
According to a Pocahontas biography, the name Rolfe is of Danish origin. It first occurs about 600 A.D., when Rolf Krake was king of Denmark. It was probably brought to England in the person of Rolfe or Rollo, while possibly accompanying one of the first Vikings to overrun England. The name seems to have remained permanently in England, ever since the Danish conquest. End...
For Whittier genealogy, the Rolfes came from Wiltshire, the John Rolfe of Pocahontas fame was of the Norfolk Rolfes. Probably related, but not definitely. With the Pocahontas John being born about 1585, and Mary Rolfe of the Whittier line being born 1582, they are at least 'generationally' close, but maybe not as close in the family way. He ACCORDING TO A POCAHONTAS BIOGRAPHY, THE NAME ROLFE IS OF DANISH ORIGIN. IT
FIRST OCCURS ABOUT 600 A.D., WHEN ROLF KRAKE WAS KING OF DENMARK. IT WAS
PROBABLY BROUGHT TO ENGLAND IN THE PERSON OF ROLFE OR ROLLO, WHILE POSSIBLY
ACCOMPANYING ONE OF THE FIRST VIKINGS TO OVERRUN ENGLAND. THE NAME SEEMS TO
HAVE REMAINED PERMANENTLY IN ENGLAND, EVERSINCE THE DANISH CONQUEST. END...
FOR WHITTIER GENEALOGY, THE ROLFES CAME FROM WILTSHIRE, THE JOHN ROLFE OF
POCAHONTAS FAME WAS OF THE NORFOLK ROLFES. PROBABLY RELATED, BUT NOT
DEFINITELY. WITH THE POCAHONTAS JOHN BEING BORN ABOUT 1585, AND MARY ROLFE OF
THE WHITTIER LINE BEING BORN 1582, THEY ARE AT LEAST GENERATIONALLY CLOSE, BUT
MAYBE NOT AS CLOSE IN THE FAMILY WAY. Reference: EONEF/. He was born circa 1515 at
England.
