Lydia Bethia Moulton (F)
b. between 14 November 1830 and 1836
Pop-up Pedigree

Her married name was Brainard. Her married name was Sawyer. Lydia Bethia Moulton NOTE: ALL Census data, but one, indicate birth years closer to 1830 than 1836. However, also have some concern over Lydia Howe(s) as IGI indicates SHE was born in 1818. Have serious doubts about the accuracy level of some of this family's records.

In 1870 Census for Windham, Connecticut, page 735:

Lines 80 and 81, living in the John H. Moulton (brother) home -
Sawyer, Lydia, 39, F, W, ? Maker, b. CT, value of Real Estate - $2,000, value of personal estate - $6,000.
Sawyer, William H., 13, M, W, at school, b. CT

Lydia is often listed as Lydia B. Sawyer/Brainard. However, one at least one occasion, seen listed as Lydia M. Sawyer. COULD the 'M' be Moulton???

Lydia was married to the father of William, prior to marrying Lewis. In 1880 Census, William is listed as Stepson.

Lydia is found in 1900 Census, a widow, with son, Harry L., residing in Hartford, CT, at 462 Washington Street. Harry listed occupation as Music Teacher.

Not sure if same, but a Lydia Brainard, widow, age 80, b. CT, appears in 1910 Census for Saginaw Michigan, living with her sister, Pamelia (Pamela?) W. Little, also a widow, age 74, b. CT, and her son, William Little, age 44, b. Michigan. POSSIBLY a long shot, but the age and place of birth make it surely possible. Now HERE's a scary area... There was a Pam?, age 13, female, in 1850 Census for Roswell Moulton and TRYPHENIA!! *sigh* DID Roswell have two wives at the same time (1850)?

NOTE: ANOTHER Lydia Brainard is the former Lydia Esther, who married Francis Lewis Brainard, of Glastonbury, CT, on 25-Jan-1849. She was born between 14 November 1830 and 1836 at Connecticut, USA. She was the daughter of Roswell Moulton and Lydia Juliette (Howe\Hawes) Howes. Lydia Bethia Moulton married Henderson Inches Sawyer, son of Benjamin Sawyer and Nancy Rogers, on 14 October 1855.      Harry L. Brainard was naturalized; Concert Pianist/Music Teacher. He Found nothing in 1910 US Census.

In 1920 US Census, Harry shows up in Montecito, Santa Barbara, California, still a teacher of music, at home, now age 45. Living on what looks to be Raven Rock Road (no #). (enumerated 28-Jan-1920). Interestingly enough, he's STILL listed age 45 in 1930 Census, as Harry L. Brainard, still in Montecito, CA, living at 319 East Valley Road. Still teaching music and now own his own $35,000 home.

There IS another Harry Brainard b. 1874, s/o Zerah Brainard and Alethea Spicer. However, he was not born in CT and was not a music teacher. He was the Harry Brainard of Michigan.

Harry and Bob Hollister were close friends and 'playboys' in the Gay Nineties. Friends of Heublein family, Ethelbert Nevin the composer and others who would now be considered members of the 'jet set.' He toured America, Europe and played the gold piano in the White House. Married Met Opera mezzo soprano, Olive Fremstad. Bio was written of her life. He lived out his life at a monastery in Santa Barbara and left his money to it. Chopin etudes were his specialty. He was born on 11 July 1874 at Hartford, Connecticut, USA. He was the son of Lewis Henry (Brainerd) Brainard and Lydia Bethia Moulton.

Thomas Sawyer died on 12 September 1706 at Lancaster, Massachusetts, USA, at age 90.

Roswell Moulton (M)
b. 1 January 1797, d. 4 April 1858
Pop-up Pedigree

Roswell Moulton Have also seen DOB listed as early as 1788, with same parents. And as specific as 01-Jan-1797, though showing Tryphenia as mother.

A Roswell Moulton appears in CT Census for Windham, in 1830, 1840 and 1850. A Roswell H. Moulton appears in CT Census for Stafford, Tolland County, in 1850 and 1860.

Roswell Moulton, 1830 Census, Windham, CT:

1 male under 5
2 males 5-10
1 male 30-40
1 female 30-40
1 female 70-80

Also appearing in same Census, John Moulton (age 20-30), and a name that looks to be Benjamin Sawyer.
Note: Lydia Bethia Moulton had not yet been born. Not sure about the elder female, if she was mother of Roswell or Lydia?

1840 US Census for Windham, Windham, Connecticut, District 24:

Roswell Moulton

1 male 10-15
3 males 15-20
1 male 40-50
1 female 5-10
1 female 40-50

Still need to account for Moulton males at some point. Seems Lydia was only daughter.

1850 US Census, Windham, Windham, Connecticut, enumerated 30-Oct-1850, dwelling 562, family 803:

Roswell Moulton, 53, M, farmer, value of Real Estate=$10,000, b. Conn.
Lydia Moulton, 54, F, b. Conn.
Lydia Moulton, 19, F, b. Conn.

NOTE: There was a Roswell Moulton b. Windham, CT in 1755/56, who died in 1777, in a powder mill explosion, so likely this one is namesake. The one who died in 1777, is buried in the Windham Cemetery.

Be VERY aware, at the same time as this Roswell, lived 'another' Roswell, Roswell H. Moulton, of Stafford, Tolland County, Connecticut. It is more likely Roswell H. Moulton who married Tryphenia Colborn, 5-Apr-1821 at Stafford, Connecticut, IS that this Roswell, s/o John and Belinda? Also in the same timeframe, though likely a younger man, was yet ANOTHER Roswell H Moulton, of Massachusetts. Seen in Wilbraham town and Hampden County. Married Sarah Porter in 1842.

Problem with Roswell H. Moulton, who married Tryphenia. If they married 1821 in Stafford, then, why was 'our' Roswell in Windham, through to 1850 (where he is seen with Lydia & Lydia)? So, ONE of the TWO Roswells in CT was son of John Moulton and Belinda/Selinda Spofford., this one was born in 1797. This gets complicated. Roswell H. in 1850/60 Census for Stafford was born @1822, so likely a son of Roswell and Tryphenia, who were married in 1821, in Stafford. The 'new' Roswell H. was married to Sarah, so I'm GUESSING he was the one who may have showed up in Massachusetts (see Sarah Porter connection).

On Roswell and Tryphenia, we have a problem. He, too, is listed as 53 in 1850 Census for Ware, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, with the following children: Pam? 13, Mullet? 9, Charles 7. Also listed is Abigail Moulton, age 35, possibly his sister, as he and she are listed b. Connecticut. SO, which Roswell was son of John Moulton and Belinda/Selinda Spofford????

From 'Windham’s Bi-Centennial 1692-1892; A Memorial Volume of the Bi-Centennial Celebration of the Town of Windham, Connecticut, containing the historical addresses, poems, and a description of events connected with the observance of the two hundreth anniversary of the incorporation of the town, as held in the year 1892.' Published by the Committee, Hartford, CT, 1893:

'Next on the north side came the house of Col. Roswell Moulton, where now his son John H. Moulton lives.'
'On the corner of Union and Jackson streets was the store of Roderick Davison, later the firm of Davison and (John H.) Moulton.'
'This section along Main street in front of the Jillson mills and along by the foot of Washington street, was known as 'Exchange Place.' On the south side of Exchange Place, towards the river, stood the old 'hay scales.' The post-office had been removed by Gen. L.E. Baldwin from Col. Roswell Moulton’s store, which then stood at the fork of the roads near the river, uptown to the little store opposite Potter’s hotel (now Young’s) and the tendency of commercial growth was that way. Such, practically, was the Willimantic of 1850.'
In reference to the various locations of the Willimantic post office: 'Then came Col. Roswell Moulton who took it down to a building near by Edward F.Casey’s present furniture store.' He was born on 1 January 1797 at Connecticut, USA. He was the son of John Moulton and Celinda Spofford. Roswell Moulton married Lydia Juliette (Howe\Hawes) Howes, daughter of Zenas Howes and Eunice Hunt, on 27 October 1818. Roswell Moulton died on 4 April 1858 at age 61.

Her married name was Moulton. Lydia Juliette (Howe\Hawes) Howes IF born Mansfield, Tolland, CT, father Zenas Howes, mother Eunice Hunt.
Same name/date/parents listed for Hampshire County, Massachusetts, as well as Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. However, another Lydia (not Lydia Juliette) was born in Chatham a year later, to Reuben Howes, so possibly a mistake there? Connecticut looks more plausible for 'our' Lydia Juliette Howes.

Father????, Elia???, is supposed to have invented the sewing machine, although there has been some controversy surrounding that fact.???

IGI shows this woman marrying John Moulton, but born in 1818 in Windham, CT. There are many finer points to this family line that seem likely to remain a bit of a mystery.

Also in IGI, there's a 'Mrs. Lydia Moulton' listed as b. 1800 died 1875, Brimfield, CT. That fits better with 1830 dob for daughter, at least. Still work to be done. She was born on 22 November 1795 at Connecticut or Massachusetts, USA. She was the daughter of Zenas Howes and Eunice Hunt. Lydia Juliette (Howe\Hawes) Howes married Roswell Moulton, son of John Moulton and Celinda Spofford, on 27 October 1818. Lydia Juliette (Howe\Hawes) Howes died on 5 May 1864 at age 68.
