James Manning Lent Baptist minister. Went to Brown University and Yale Divinity School. Moved to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1902. James had a church in Weston, Massachusetts, and possibly later in Providence, Rhode Island. Was given a marriage date, originally, of 1900, but 1910 Census states James and Gertrude had only been married 5 years, first marriage for both.
The same James M. Lent, b. 'Apr-1872' attending the Worcester Academy in 1900 US Census. It shows his place of birth as Nova Scotia (as well as his parents'). He is listed as a 'boarder' at Worcester Academy, so, perhaps he was not a STUDENT, but rather working and boarding there?
It is also this James who is listed in 1910 US Census, residing in Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, Sup. Dist 119, En. Dist 677, Sheet 21B residing at #5 Northampton Road, lines 92-94:
Lent, James M., Head, M, W, 38, M1-5, Can, Can, Can, 1893 (or 1895?), Naturalized, Clergy
Lent, Gertrude M. S., wife, F, W, 31, M1-5,1/1, CT, Can, Can, none
Lent, Elizabeth S., dau., F, W, 2, S, CT, Can, CT, none
This narrows down marriage date closer to 1905, or possibly 1904? Provides middle initial for Elizabeth, as well as providing the Amherst, MA location for 1910.
US Census for 1920, Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island, at #11 Quincy Avenue (family 361), residing in the same house as Thomas and Adelaide Stewart (family 362):
Lent, James M., Head, M, W, 46, Marr., 1885, Na-1901, Can, Can, Can, minister - church.
Lent, Gertrude, Wife, F, W, 39, Marr., CT, CT, CT, none
Lent, Elizabeth, dau., F, W, 12, S, CT, Can, CT, none
Lent, Barbara, dau., F, W, 5, S, MA, Can, CT, none
The above contradicts the 1910 Census, regarding Gertrude and where parents were born. Though SHE is still listed as born CT, she now lists her parents as such, whereas in 1910, she listed them (or the enumerator did), as born in Canada.
In 1930 Census for Providence, Providence, Rhode Island, living with Gertrude's father at 230 Sackett Street:
Sawyer, William H, Head, owns own home value $12,000, radio, M, W, 73, Wid., CT, CT, CT, dealer in hardware
Lent, James M., s-in-l, M, W, 57, M-32, NS, NS, NS, clergyman - Baptist
Lent, Gertrude, M. S., dau., F, W, 50, M-25, CT, CT, CT, none
Lent, Barbara B., g-dau., F, W, 15, S, MA, NS, CT, none - school
This confirms Gertrude's parents were born in CT. It also establishes that James was a Baptist minister. No listing of Elizabeth, but she'd be around 22, so possibly had married by 1930? Believe it also confirmed the 1885 arrival date in US, though did not list date of naturalization, this time.
While doing several WWW searches in Feb-2003, I did come across another James Lent, baptist minister, from Tusket, NS, who died around 1850 - '1850 obituary from the CHRISTIAN MESSENGER newspaper for Baptist minister, Rev. James Lent of Tusket.'. I wonder if this is merely coincidence? Though James Manning Lent's grandfather WAS a James, he died later than 1850 (sometime between 1856-1869) and was more likely a mariner, based on where he died (West Indies).
In 1927, was at Brown University, working on his Masters.
Is said to have been named for his great-great uncle who founded Brown University and the Baptist Church in Warren, Rhode Island.
James moved in 1902, to Boston, Massachusetts. His nephew, Clarence, was head of Patch & Co. - medical laboratory.
His WWI Draft Registration lists him as Rev. James Manning Lent, of Rockland, Plymouth Co, MA. And listed his birth date as 04-Apr-1873! Was minister of the 1st Baptist Church, in what appears to be Whitman, MA. Wife listed as Gertrude M. Lent, residing at 670 Washington ?, Whitman?, MA. He was naturalized; Reverend - Minister. He was born on 4 May 1872 at
Freeport, Digby County, Nova Scotia. He was the son of
Manning Lent and
Mary Emma Israel. James Manning Lent married
Gertrude May Sawyer, daughter of
William Henderson Sawyer and
Martha Elizabeth Randall, on 27 June 1905 at
Rhode Island, USA. James Manning Lent died on 28 October 1937 at
Providence, Rhode Island, USA, at age 65.
