This James is/was the ONLY James who matched the "profile" of the James in the 1901 Culloden Census, listed as b. 1854. Tombstone #19 in EFB Cemetery.
He is also the only James I've found that matches a 1900 US Census for Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, as a servant in the home of Lidnell and Mary J. Newman. Listed as born Mar-1855, age 45, M-20 (which also fits), b. NS, same as parents. He arrived in US in 1889, still an "Alien" Farm Laborer. My thinking is he went where the work was, and in 1900, he was residing in the US, but no idea for how long. He left a rather young family residing in NS, but I BELIEVE, based on 1901 Census, he did travel home, at least occasionally.
Family listing in 1881 Canada Census for Digby Town, Digby County, Nova Scotia:
Annie HANDSPIKER M Female Scottish 24 Nova Scotia Methodist Church of England
James HANDSPIKER M Male Dutch 26 Nova Scotia Fisherman Meth. Church of England
Eliza M HANDSPIKER Female Dutch 4m (b. Dec) Nova Scotia Meth. Church of Eng.
