Reference: HFWEST-1. Her married name was West.
Mary E. Stanton Suspect Mary is d/o James & Margaret of Newburgh NY in 1850/60.
NO idea where anyone has found information supporting Mary E. Stanton was b. 1832. Need to seek out earlier census records on Henry, but believe Mary Stanton was his one and ONLY wife. In 1900 Census, she listed her child count as 4/1, indicating only one living child, which would be Lillian.
A Grace Stanton b. Jan-1873 listed with Mary' daughter and her husband in 1900 Census, as 'servant'.
In 1900 US Census for Henry & Mary, is listed a Charles Stanton, b. Mar-1882, 'boarder'.
Both born AFTER she married Henry, so not likely from any previous marriage. What about niece and nephew?
Charles b. 25-Mar-1882, Sparrowbush, NY, d. 1955, Everett, Washington (state) s/o Franklin Stanton. Franklin, b. @1853, so Benjamin Stanton and Sarah Ann Cargin... also parents of Mary E. Stanton b. Mar-1850. SO, Charles was surely a nephew.????
Grace was d/o another brother, Gilbert, b. @1848, Sullivan Co, NY, so, a niece.?????
Okay, now this all looks very concrete and easy to figure out... PROBLEM is, the Census records of the time are a bit sketchy in pulling this family group together... see below...
Grace Stanton, prob. d/o Gilbert b. 1848, NY, found in Forestburgh, Sullivan Co in 1880, wife Charlotte, b. @1855.
ISSUE w/ Stantons:
1860 US Census for Forestburgh, NY:
Benjamin, b. 1802
Sarah, b. 1813
Gilbert, b 1848
MARY SHOULD BE RIGHT HERE!!!
Franklin, b. 1853
Louisa, b. 1855
NO OTHER CHILDREN LISTED!
1860 Census or Newburgh...
Margaret Stanton, age 33 (no listing of a husband)
Rachel Stanton, age 20, tailoress
James H. Stanton, age 18, laborer
Mary Stanton, age 10, all b. NY
ONLY Mary in Sullivan or Orange Counties that is even close in age..
Another, though older, listed aged 14 in 1860, is found as daughter of Truman Stanton and wife, Mary A. SHE is listed as Mary E. Stanton, with two brothers shown, William, b. @1840, and Truman J. b. @1843. This family is in THOMPSON, Sullivan Co, NY in 1860.
In 1870, weirder...
Lumberland, Sullivan Co in 1870:
Gilbert and Charlotte in their own householf, he's 23, she's 17.
Other house is only:
Benjamin aged 63, 'Sally Ann' (Sarah) aged 57, and Louisa, age 15.
And where is Mary? She was not married until 1873... so look for a domestic somewhere...
One b. @1851 living in Liberty, Sullivan Co, with parents Steven and Harriet.
A domestic b. @1851 in Forestburgh, and another b. @1849 in Mamakating, Sullivan Co, NY
Believe the domesting in Forestburgh, in home of John Jones, is this Mary.
1850 for Lumberland (are they close?)
STANTON:
B. 42 teamster, NY
S. 37 f NY
J 15 f NY (Julia?)
Wm 13 f NY (does show 'f') William (if M)
R 11 f NY (Rachel)
S 9 m NY (Silas)
A 7 m NY (Albert) (GOOD to THIS point... then..)
L 5 f NY (?Sarah?)
P 2 m NY (should be Gilbert?)
H 3m f NY (would have been Mary E. )
I think some researchers MAY have mixed up multiple families?
Lumberland and Forestburgh, in Sullivan county offers two close ones, with these towns sharing a common border, so surely a possible 'cross-town' family.
Tough area to work, as Forestburgh, Lumberland, Sparrow Bush, Port Jervis, and Deer Park are ALL within about a 12X12 mile square. She was born in March 1850 at
Forestburg, Sullivan County, New York, USA. She was the daughter of
Benjamin Stanton and
Sarah Ann (Carr?) Cargin. Mary E. Stanton married
Henry Farnum West, son of
Jonathan West and
Sarah Lawrence, circa 1873 at
New York, USA. Mary E. Stanton died on 27 March 1934.
