Francis B. Lent Property
Water Street, Westport
1891
Building no longer stands, but it was last used as a whale watching office and prior to that, in 1993, had been used by the Bank of Nova Scotia. It broke apart in an attempt to move it.
Francis B. Lent 'Frank' bought this rectangle shaped property for $10 from Frank Morrell and his mother Margaret on May 5th 1891, and presumably began construction of this building and possibly the rest of the fish plant. Francis was 32-years old at the time. A newspaper article indicated that Francis enjoyed duck hunting as he and two friends shot 46 ducks on a gunning expedition (December, 1885). Francis was from Freeport and he was the son of Capt. Abraham Lent and Elizabeth Lent. The fish plant was incorporated as F.B. Lent Company Ltd.. F.B. Lent Company Ltd. sold the building and business to Hatheway Collins (possibly son of John Collins, builder of house owned by Robbie Denton) on December 3rd 1914. Hatheway was a mariner. Hatheway died four years after he purchased the business at the age of 46. The property was later owned by Daniel Benjamin Kenney, and the 'legacy' D. B. Kenney Fisheries began in this building. This particular building was mostly used for salt fish, and therefore had a role in 'Finnan Haddie' making. He was buried at
Hilltop Cemetery, Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was born on 20 August 1859. He was the son of
Abraham Lent and
Elizabeth Brown. Francis (Franklin) B. Lent died on 5 May 1930 at age 70.
