She was the daughter of Shippy Spurr Lent and Hannah Cook. Lucretia Lent married Benjamin Nelson Thurber, son of Samuel Thurber and Mary (Polly) Lewis, on 20 December 1838 at Freeport, Long Island, Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada. NOTE: No clue on Chipman and Emma (nephew of Benjamin?). Seems the children listed below that couple are more likely children OF that couple. Rest are most probably children of Benjamin and Maria. Chipman was listed in 1871 Census for Long Island, Digby, NS, as 21, w/ wife 'Emmer' - 19, and daughter 'Edner' - 1yr. Chipman had two more children listed in 1891, Garfield (b. @1882) and Charles (b. @1884).

COULD be merely coincidence, but suspect Lemuel to be POSSIBLY the brother of Maria. The age listed for Maria does NOT coincide, at least with the transcription of the 1881 Census. One is right, the other wrong, no doubt. This may help clarify some of the children, though.

Lent Book indicates a 2nd wife of Nancy Brooks, with NO MENTION of Maria Prime. He married Lucretia Lent, daughter of Shippy Spurr Lent and Hannah Cook, on 20 December 1838 at Freeport, Long Island, Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Benjamin Nelson Thurber married Maria N. A widow by 1881 Canada Census, the following record is found for Freeport, Digby County, Nova Scotia (Dist 15, S-dist E, page 7, household 26):

Charles LENT Male English 20 Nova Scotia Seaman Baptist
Jesse G LENT Male English 12 Nova Scotia Baptist
Lezzie L.L. LENT Female English 8 England Baptist
Byron S. LENT Male English 5 Nova Scotia Baptist

Based on entry for 'Lezzie', I wonder if she was, in fact, not a twin, but a person carrying MANY 'L' names? Lizzie Laliah Lena Louella Lent... Now SOMEONE would have had to have a pretty warped sense of humor for THAT one!!! Further research required to find if there were actually twins with one dying young, or, if, indeed, someone had a thing for 'L' names.

Following John Shippy's death, Melissa is said to have relocated to Boston, MA, then, later, to Marblehead, MA.

In 1920 US Census for Marblehead, MA, she's listed in son Jesse's family, as Melissa Dorsey mother, age 80, widow, arr: 1885, Na. 1889.

When she married John Dorsey in Lynn, her parents were listed as Thomas and Mary LENT! (Very Odd!). She was born in 1839. She was the daughter of Benjamin Nelson Thurber and Lucretia Lent. Melissa Thurber married John Shippy Lent, son of James Lent and Sarah Elizabeth (Sally) Brinton, in 1859 at Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada. William and wife Sarah.

Her married name was McDormand. Her married name was Lent. Eliza Israel Of Freeport. Related, somehow, to Hannah and Sarah Israel - wives of William Jabez Lent, brother of Cunningham. It is important to note, these Israel ladies MAY have been daughters of Balthazar, son of Balsor, the Loyalist ancestor. Hard to imagine a man arriving in the colonies around 1765 (probably no YOUNGER than his late teens, then) would be having children through the 1830's.

FYI, John Balsour Israel, s/o Balsor, christened 13-Aug-1795 at Trinity Parish, Digby. She was born in 1833. She was the daughter of Balsor (Balthazar) Israel and Sarah ?. NOTE: Chances are EXTREMELY good that Francis B. Lent, listed above, is same as in this AND the HPKR database, married to Alva Coggins, father of Francis Abraham Lent, who married Carolyn Lucy Handspiker. Since the chances are so good, and Francis B. already exists in THIS database, am making that connection, for now (Feb-2003) and will await confirmation from Shirely (Lent source).

There's a possibility that Abraham and Elizabeth had a son as late as 1885, as the listing for Francis and Alva in 1901 Census, indicates a brother, Henry, b. 20-Dec-1885.

From Probate Records, it would appear that Abraham was a 3/4 owner of the schooner 'Little Fred'. He was born on 25 August 1832 at Weymouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of Shippy Spurr Lent and Hannah Cook. Abraham Lent married Elizabeth Brown on 16 November 1856. Abraham Lent died in 1885 at Westport, Nova Scotia, Canada.
