Charles Banks Odd story. Appears Charles was Susan's father, but Addie and Charles never married.
Here's how this seems to pan out.
ONLY male Banks in 1880 Census for Plainfield, NH is Charles Banks, b. 1820/21, NH...
Susan MUST be d/o Addie! No other potential females in this family!
Perhaps, Susan was born out of wedlock - - - a tryst between Addie and a Mr. Banks?
The ONLY male 'Banks' in Plainfield in 1880 Census was a Charles Banks, age 59, laborer, MARRIED (no wife shown), b. NH, but no parent POBs shown. Wonder if Susan and Addie took on name of Addie's Husband? And, who DID she marry?
Same Charles was in Canaan for 1870 Census, farmer, married to Sarah A. ?, age 36, with 8 children! That Sarah, though, shows up in Chicago IL in 1880, with 7 of those 8 chidren 'in tow'. Was she divorced or widowed? COULD Charles Banks also be father of Susan, then?
Here's the 'original' Banks family in Canaan in 1870:
Charles Banks 1821 New Hampshire White Male
Sarah A Banks 1834 New Hampshire White Female
Charles E Banks 1854 New Hampshire White Male
Henry Arthur Banks 1858 New Hampshire White Male
Nellie Banks 1858 New Hampshire White Female (not in 1880 Census)
Frank B Banks 1861 New Hampshire White Male (not in 1880 Census
Willis J Banks 1863 New Hampshire White Male
George or Jonas W Banks 1865 New Hampshire White Male
Emma Banks 1867 New Hampshire White Female (not in 1880 Census)
Walter H. Banks 1869 New Hampshire White Male
add from 1880, Chicago:
Minnie Banks, 1872, New Hamsphire White Female
Percy Banks, 1874 New Hampshire White Male
So, left NH sometime after 1874, leaving Charles behind, possibly due to some indiscretions?
Here are some of the family in 1900
Charles E. married a Bessie from Vermont, had a son, Elmer E. Banks, b. 1885, IL, Charles went from being a cabinet maker in 1880 to a painter in 1900.
Henry Arthur moved out to San Francisco, married Lauretta from Iowa, had a son, Arthur M. or W. b. 1887
Now, HERE's where it gets interesting!!!
Frank B. stayed in Chicago, married June, of MA, had Lena, and Arthur.
and.. HMM!!!! Listed in the same family with Frank:
Banks, Charles (H or D), father w, m, Oct-1820, 79, M-52, NH, NH, NH
Banks, Sarah A., mother, w, f, Aug-1834, 65, M-52, 12/10, NH, NH, NH
Well, THAT explains why I couldn't find Charles in 1900 Census for NH!!!
Walter H. moved to Proviso from Chicago (not far), married ?Lucy?, of WI, had Lorraine A., Jan-1894, IL, and Walter R., Aug-1897, IL, wife was b. WI
Percy and George in same house in Chicago for 1900...
BANKS:

Here's 1880 Census with Charles, in teh COLE family! Wonder if Addie had been worknig as a servant for this family in Plainfield?
1880 US Census Plainfield, Sullivan Co, NH:
George S. COLE Self M Male W 26 NH Farm Laborer NH NH
Mary A. COLE Wife M Female W 23 NH Keeping House NH NH
Clarence E. COLE Dau S Female W 1 NH NH NH
Burton A. COLE Other S Male W 13 NH Works On Farm NH NH
James RUSSELL Other S Male W 23 NH Laborer CAN CAN
Charles BANKS Other M Male W 59 NH Laborer --- ---
Next house over Benjamin Cole b. @1820, and wife, Lucy A., b. @1817
Now HERE'S a catch! Ira's family (including Susan Banks), is on same page where George Cole's enumeration begins. Though Plainfield wasn't a bustling metropolis, this would indicate a pretty close proximity of the two households, as well! He was born circa 1821 at
New Hampshire, USA.
