Have SERIOUS issues with the Lizzie/Arthur connection, because another couple, same ages, resided in Swanzey, NH, in both 1900 and 1910, causing serious doubt as to who was whom.

In 1900 Census, we find Arthur Cole (in Swanzey) married to Lizzie for 4 years. We also find Lizzie KIMBALL in the home of her father, Horace, still single. This can't be the same Lizzie, unless she was double-enumerated! In 1900, already claims to have had 2 children, one living. In 1900, with Arthur Cole, she's listed as Elizabeth C. Cole, with her father born in Massachusetts. This is a different Lizzie, though born May-1881. She is listed as 'Carrie' in 1910, with Arthur 'R' Cole, b. 1874, she born 1881. Carrie was born a Hildreth, as her brother is listed in 1910 Census at Swanzey. Just not crazy about Lizzie to Carrie, unless that WAS the 'C' in Lizzie C in 1900. SO, be careful with this family group, especially in early 1900s, as it could easily be confused with the Coles of Swanzey. She was born in 1881 or 1882 at New Hampshire, USA. She was the daughter of Horace F. Kimball and Flora M. Horton.

In 1860, Austin was listed as a steamship captain. In the history of Sullivan and Cheshire Counties, New Hampshire, is found the following entry:

'On the 4th of July, 1859, Austin Goings, of New London, launched the first steamboat upon Sunapee Lake. It was a side-wheeler, the length of the keel being sixty-five feet. It could carry three hundred passengers. Its name was the 'Surprise'. but that point in the history of Sunapee had not arrived, when a steamboat would pay, and, the war of 1861 coming on, Captain Goings enlisted and his boat was dismantled.'

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Eleanor L. (Goings) Hayward, 83 of Rte. 103A died Wed. Oct. 24, 2001 at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born in New London, N.H. on Sept. 9, 1918, the daughter of Alfred A. and Freda E. (Johnson) Goings and had been a lifelong resident of New London.

Mrs. Hayward graduated as the salutatorian of her New London High School Class of 1936, and attended Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt. She married Earl J. Hayward on June 5, 1942. In 1948, she and her husband started the business of Hayward Refrigeration in New London where she had worked for more then 50 years and was currently vice president of the corporation.

Mrs. Hayward was a charter member of the Soo-Nipi Audubon Society. She wasan active member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New London, serving for more than 70 years on the Altar Guild.

Together with Lillian Howes, she founded the St. Andrew's Thrift Shop in the 1950s, served on it's board of director's for many years, and volunteered many hours working in the Thrift Shop. She was also a member of Martha-Relham Chapter, O.E.S.

Mrs. Hayward was predeceased by a sister, Alfreda Loverin and a brother, Elmer Goings. Members of her family surviving include her husband of 59 years, Earl J. Hayward, of New London; three sons and their wives, The Rev. Dennis E. Hayward and Tina of St. Albans, Vt., Michael J. Hayward, Sr. and Alison of Grantham, N.H., and Patrick P. Hayward and Roberta of Croydon, N.H; eight grandchildren, Shawn, Nathan, Ross, Raymond, Michael, Jr., Justin, Heidi, and Heather; one great-grandson, Jacob; a sister, Dorothy Hubbard of Wolfeboro, N.H; four nieces and two nephews.

There are no calling hours. Funeral services will be held on Sat., Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Gould Rd., New London, N.H. Burial will be in West Part Cemetery, New London.

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Earl J. Hayward, Jr., 82, of Route 103A, New London, N.H., died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at his home. He was born in Newport, N.H. on Feb. 3, 1922, the son of Earl J. and Mae E. (Root) Hayward. He spent his early years in Croydon, Grantham, and Newport, N.H.

Mr. Hayward was a lumberman and the last operator of the Otterville Water-Powered Sawmill. He was a pitcher for the City Lumber Corp. Team in Andover, N.H. Mr. Hayward served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had lived in New London since 1938 and he and his late wife started Hayward Refrigeration in New London in 1948. He was currently owner and President. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New London. Mr. Hayward was a member of King Solomon's Lodge 14 F & AM of Elkins, N.H; a Shriner; a member of Heidelberg Lodge 92 IOOF of New London; and the American Legion Post in White River Junction, Vt. He was a member of the NH Beekeepers Association, the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust, and was a Charter member of Soo-Nipi Audubon Society. He was a member of Treeing Walker
Breeders and Fanciers Assoc., had been president of the NH Sportsman Alliance; and was instrumental in NH Electrical Contractors getting electrical licensing in the State and served on the Board of Directors.

He enjoyed hunting with his dogs and reestablished the Purple Ribbon Nance Bred Dogs. He was a former director of the NH Wildlife Federation, was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Federation, and was a 50+ year member of Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. He enjoyed singing and acting in Croydon. His wife of 59 years, Eleanor L. (Goings) Hayward, died in 2001. Members of his family surviving include three sons and daughters-in-law, The Rev. Dennis E. and Deborah Hayward of St. Albans, Vt., Michael J. and Alison Hayward of Grantham, N.H; and Patrick P. and Roberta Hayward of Croydon, N.H; six grandchildren and spouses, Shawn, Nathan, Michael, Jr., Justin and Katie, Heidi and Caleb, and Heather and Dana; one great-grandson, Jacob; a sister, Mona Osgood of New Port Richey, Fla; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
