No James Lents born in Canada listed in 1880 Census for NY. There is ONE 'possibility' in the 1880 Census, in that he is listed, at least, as born in Canada. Probably born in 1859, which doesn't seem to fit with the family story, but age could have been incorrect in census! So, just to cover all the bases, below is the record of the ONE James Lent in the 1880 US Census that was listed as b. Canada, fa: b. Canada, mo: b. New York (another 'good fit'):
1880 US Census for Milford, Worcester, Massachusetts:
Harris Harding LENT Self M Male W 35 CANA Carpenter CANA CANA
Alice Abbie LENT Wife M Female W 24 MA Keeping House MA NH
James W. LENT Other S Male W 20 CANA Carpenter CANA NY
Frank ALLEN Other S Male W 21 CANA Carpenter CANA CANA
Note the James relation to HofH is 'Other' and that Alice was born MA not NY or Canada. Perhaps, researching Harris will help? Was Harris a brother of a James W. Lent?
What we learn of Harris Harding Lent (b. Mar-1845) is he was son of Rev. James Lent and Elizabeth Harding (b. 1811, NS). NO listing of a brother James in family records. Harris could POSSIBLY be the one listed in 1870 Census for NY, living in Brooklyn, though without further info, not going to jump quite yet to that assumption. Harris IS listed in 1900 and 1910 US Census records, living in Milford, Worcester, MA. What relation is Harris to James?
Alice, wife of Harris, b. 1855 (can't make out month). Daughter, Alice Marion Lent b. 18-Mar-1882, MA.
He was born between 1855 and 1858 at Nova Scotia, Canada
. He was the son of James Lent
and Theodsia ???
