  • Name: Samuel Arnold
  • Birth: 30-JUN-1783 in: Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada
  • Death: 13-JAN-1868 in: Bayham, Elgin County, Ontario, Canada
  • Father: Stephen Arnold
  • Mother: Mrs. Stephen Arnold

Notes: Was baptized as an adult at Trinity Anglican Church, Digby... date 04-Sep-1808. Still have serious issues with the dates on the early Samuels. Why would Samuel and Barbara have married on same date as Samuel "Jr" was baptized? Or, is that som e odd transcription error?

Is THIS the Samuel listed as follows:

Surrogate Court Records for the London District and Elgin County from 1800 to 1900. For the London District, all the available records were indexed. Elgin County was formed in 1853; thereafter only Elgin County residents appear in the index.

Dates listed a "legal" dates, and would likely be AFTER date of death (at least in most cases).

There are those who would say this Samuel, who married Barbara Bain, later married Phoebe Ann, but was it truly the same Samuel?

If so, the following notes would add family members... as would some of the above...

ARNOLD WILLIAM 2 153

That shows some likely relationship between William, Esther, and John.
Surely, in Southwold in 1881 Census, William, aged 69, b. England,
postmaster for Southwold, had a wife, listed as "Hester", age 55, b. ON,
and two daughters, Louisa, age 21, and Elizabeth, age 17, they were
Methodists.

Southwold - Elgin Co - Ontario

William ARNOLD M Male English 69 England Post Master Weslyan Methodist
Hester ARNOLD M Female English 55 O Weslyan Methodist
Louisa ARNOLD Female English 21 O Weslyan Methodist
Elizabeth ARNOLD Female English 17 O Weslyan Methodist

1881 Census for Southwold, Elgin West, Ontario

That said, there was a 14 year difference in age, which fits, exactly, with
ages at time of death. Doubt, then, that this was a transcription error.

PROBLEM: If England truly was place of birth, can't see how this William would be related to the Samuel Arnold line, and the Bain/Handspiker/Burnham connections.

From LDS:

Louisa Matilda Arnold - Birth: 03 AUG 1859 Talbotville, , Elgin, Ontario
Death: 23 MAR 1939

Louisa listed as d/o William Arnold and Hesther Payne (Esther/Hester Paine), and she married Thomas E. Crary, on 14-Sep-1881, though that record indicated she died before 1922!

Hester Paine, b. 09 JUL 1825 Of, , Elgin, Ontario, d. 03-Jan-1893.

In in "Index to the Tremaine Map of 1864 for Elgin County, Ontario, Canada:

ARNOLD,S. (Samuel),Bay,2,03 South 1/2 of East 1/2

So JAMES is the Southwold ARNOLD!
Also, given this was in 1864, suspect Samuel "Jr." was our "III"

Notes: aka Barbara Bane, Barbara McBean, etc. Not yet entirely sure if child of George b. 1787 or his father. Problem is, there's a "daughter" of George Jr., named Barbara, who is mentioned as being married to Samuel Arnold, but mentioned in JUNIOR' s will as his daughter. That said, records indicate Barbara and Samuel married in 1807. George Jr. was born in 1787, this is just plain impossible. My thinking is, the Will mentioned MAY be that of George Sr??? So lost on this line, at this ti me (May-2005).

On fact that troubles me. If she was christened as an adult in 1815, did she REALLY make the trip back from Ontario to Digby?

From Jocelyn Howat:

"I have a copy of a letter from Barbara requesting:
"Know all Men by these presents that I Barbary Arnold of the Township of Bayham in the County of Middlesec in the District of London in the Province of Upper Canada have made ordained constituted and appointed George Bayne of the Town of Digb y in the Province of Nova Scotia my true and lawful attorney for me and in my name and for my proper use and benefit to receive my share of my Fathers' property and sent it to me by Dennis Dowlin. In Witness where of I have here unto set my han d and seal this twenty ninth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven Barbary Arnold.
