  • Name: Samuel Arnold
  • Birth: 1806 in: Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada
  • Death: 27-DEC-1883 in: Elgin County, Ontario, Canada
  • Father: Samuel Arnold
  • Mother: Barbara Bain

Notes: Following from transcription of Calton Cemetery in Bayham, Elgin, ON:

150. Marble column on double cement base with urn broken off

northwest - Samuel/ARNOLD/died Dec. 27, 1883/aged 77 yrs./Selina/ARNOLD/died Mar. 7, 1882/aged 30 y’s/ARNOLD

Northeast - Effie/wife of/Samu’l ARNOLD/born Nov. 17, 1815/died Nov. 28, 1901

Might Selina and Alma have been daughters of this Samuel?

What is a bit peculiar is the following 1881 Census from Vienna, Elgin East, Ontario..

Thomas ARNOLD M Male Scottish 32 Ontario Hotel Keeper Baptist
Phoebe ARNOLD M Female Irish 32 Ontario C C Baptist
Sussie ARNOLD Female Scottish 12 Ontario C C Baptist
Alexander CRUICKSHANK Male Scottish 38 Scotland Law Student Presbyterian
William HILLACKEY Male Irish 22 Ontario School Teacher Roman Catholic
Joseph SAUNDERS M Male English 29 England Machinist Church of England

According to Ontario wills, this Samuel (in Census, above) died on 28-Jan-1867, wife Phoebe was executrix, and at time of will, listed children were THomas, Sarah, Edward, Samuel, John, Jane, and Rachel. He signed his will in Jun-1866.

It's the only Thomas with daughter Susan who would fit, but look at wife's name! Was his mother a Phoebe AND he married a Phoebe? It's surely not his mother in the 1881 Census! In fact, no luck finding her in 1881, so far. SO CONFUSED with Thoma s/Samuel, here... not sure what's going on. Was Thomas s/o Samuel also married to a Phoebe? OR, was the Phoebe, executrix of Samuel (The Elder)'s will, as his daughter-in-law? If so, why is there an 1883/4 date of death for Samuel, if his wil l was probated far earlier?

The following family shows Samuel and family, residing in Bayham in 1880, so hard to say he was dead before then. Now, that said, another family, shown below, shows another Samuel, born in right timeframe but not in NS:

1881 Canada Census for Bayham, Elgin East, ON (correct one by MY accounts):

Samuel ARNOLD M Male English 74 Nova Scotia Farmer Baptist
Effie ARNOLD M Female German 65 O Baptist
Susan ARNOLD Female English 44 O Baptist

The listing above is the ONLY one that would fit Samuel born 1807, christened 1808 in Digby, NS.

Now, this OTHER one shows a Samuel close in age proximity, but listed born in Ontario:

1881 Canada Census for Chatham, Kent, Ontario:

LEWIS H ARNOLD M Male German 45 O Hotel & Store Keeper C. Methodist
MARGARET ARNOLD M Female Irish 43 Q C. Methodist
MARTHA J ARNOLD Female German 20 O C. Methodist
SIDNEY J ARNOLD Male German 19 O Store Clerk C. Methodist
WILLIAM ARNOLD Male German 16 O C. Methodist
MAGGIE ARNOLD Female German 11 O C. Methodist
SAMUEL ARNOLD W Male German 75 O Yeoman Church of England

Of course, even the above wouldn't fit with the will information.
