There were four men named Handlespiker: Coenradt, Wilhelm, Phillip and Johannes, who were all in the New Jersey Volunteers, and could have been brothers, or some other relation to each other. Another Hanselpacker, probably related is John, born
25-Jun-1773, and died 6-Oct-1845. He's in the LDS Ancestral File, and the only state of reference for those dates is New Jersey. That particular John was married to a Julia Balmain, born 1783 in New York. They had at least 11 children, including:
Magdalene, Margaret, Phillip, William, Eleanor, John, Mary, Catherine, Julia, Ann, David N., and Matilda Jane, between 1800 and 1818. Our Coenradt and his "brothers" were all members of the 4th Battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers. Mr. Todd
Braisted, who heads the reenactment group for the New Jersey Volunteers (as of 1993) has sent me copies of the muster rolls, which I also made copies of at the New Jersey State Library, in Trenton. Apparently, Cunrad and Philip enlisted in the 4th at
Staten Island, on 22 January, 1777. They joined into Captain Peter Ruttan's Company, under the Battalion Command of Lieutenant Colonel Abraham Van Buskirk. Many of the recruits came from the Ramapo Valley area, especially near Mahwah, New Jersey.
Some of the common names in the 4th were: Wannamaker, Hemeon, Ramsey, Fox, Demerest and Ackerman. He also provided me another copy of the List of Disbanded Soldiers, Mustered out at Digby. Some of the names of note, on that list were
Abraham Van Tassel and several Purdys. Of the Purdys, Abraham was listed as a New York Volunteer, while Joseph, Daniel and Nathaniel were listed as loyalist from Pt. Matoon (wherever that is).
There is a reference made, in the History of Mahwah, New Jersey, to a Cunrad Henselbekker, in the 1770 minutes of the Consistory that reads as follows: "Cunrad and Catharina Henselbekker fell in the heavy sin of the shame, in that they, through
intercourse, had begotten a child. On this acount, they were summoned to appear before the church council, and after earnest representation, this public action regarding them... to which they gave an affirmative answer... and confess to the church and
through... confession and prayer.... to make good the given offense, which they also promised to do. Thereupon, they were brought before the church the following Sunday, and after previous exhortation to obtain forgiveness and reconciliation for their
great sin against God through the blood of Jesus Christ, they were again released." At first I thought that this meant that Cunrad and Catharina were later husband and wife, but according to some Presbyterian records, which I have not seen, Wilhelm
married Catherina, and Cunrad married Anna. This indicates, since both are named Henselbekker in the book,
that Cunrad conceived a child with his sister-in-law.
From what I can figure, the four men spread out geographically, as follows: Cunrad and Wilhelm went to Digby, Phillip went to St. John, New Brunswick, and John seemingly left the NJV early, and may have denounced his loyalty, because it looks like
he stayed in New Jersey after the war (probably in Bergen County).
Note: In "Loyalists in Nova Scotia" by Gilroy, it lists Conrad Handlespike as being "(given) 350 acres of land in Digby-1784 and escheated in 1800." For Wilhelm, it said he had 100 acres in Digby township in 1801. In Deeds to Digby Co. Index
Vol 1 1785-1838 shows "Handspiker Conrad and wife to Edward Thorpe, Digby Neck 1797 Book 1B, p. 705.
Note: Some data on children was sent from Leland Harvie, mentioning notes made by Lois Kernihan, at the public archives some years ago. These dates on Katherina, Susanna, Anne and Mary, and the
burial date for Coenradt, are taken from the Digby Anglican Church records.
Hanselbekker info:
A Rachel Traphagen married a John Hanselbekker on 22Nov1795 at Kakiat (unknown state, poss in
New Jersey. Married by Rev. G. G. Brinkerhoff. In Pre-1790 NJ Census found three Traphagens:
Jonathan (Hackensack), Johannes (Hackensack) and David (Bedminster in Somerset County).
This John may be the fourth brother, but no way to prove it, yet.
Add Handselpiker as another variant. As of 6 Feb 97, in e-mail from Brian Middleton, there is no
mention of Conrad's parents at the Admiral Digby Museum in Digby, NS.
Received the Handspiker data, available at the Admiral Digby Museum, today, 26 Feb 1997, from
Charlotte Vardy. Has Conrad Sr. as "Dutch" descent, 2nd NJV, middle name "Enoch". Will try to
incorporate as much data as possible, into this genealogy.
