  • Name: William H. "Harry" Dunbar
  • Birth: Abt 1842 in: Scotland
  • Death: 1911 in: Massachusetts, USA
  • Father:
  • Mother:

Notes: Middle "full" name could be Henry or Harrison, or, simply Harry!

EITHER William H. Sr. or son, William H. Jr. was in Company B, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry, as a marker stating such is posted near William Sr. grave in Coweeset Cemetery. Hard to say, and hard to figure which War, as Senior died 1911, and Junio r seems to have died in 1899?

It MAY prove helpful to contact the Pearl Street United Methodist Church, at 415 Pearl Street, as the clerks in Brockton City Hall suggested that was a "Scottish Church" during the early 1900s, AND, is just up the road a mile or two from the Cowee set Cemetery. They MIGHT have some records on these Dunbars, or others. (508) 586-6744

1910 Census for Brockton:

DUNBAR:

William H., head, m, w, 69, M1-40, Scot, Scot, Scot, arr: 1858/Na, house painter
Agnes M, wife, f, w, 57, M1-40, Can, Can, Can, arr: 1860, none
George C., son, m, w, 24, S, MA, Scot, Can, house painter (as well)
Daisy A., dau, f, w, 18, S, MA, Scot, Can, saleswoman - retail dry goods

1880 US Census, New Haven, CT:
residing at 248 Grand Avenue -

Wm H. DUNBAR Self M Male W 36 SCOTLAND House Painter SCOTLAND ENG
Agnes Maud DUNBAR Wife M Female W 30 SCOTLAND Keeping House SCOTLAND SCOTLAND
Maud T DUNBAR Dau S Female W 6 CT At School SCOTLAND SCOTLAND
Wm H. DUNBAR Son S Male W 2 CT SCOTLAND SCOTLAND

Only drawback for 1880 Census is birth location for Agnes. However, the marriage in 1870, surely indicates they could have started having children as early as 1873/74, with Maud. Fact that it's a William H, b. Scotland, and a Agnes, and ages ar e SURELY within reason, AND, he's a house painter... too much fitting to not be a VERY likely possibility.

William (Sr.) was listed in late 1880's city directories for Brockton, as
living on Boyden.
87-88 William A Dunbar, Boyden near Cary, painter/paper hanger
89-90 William H. Dunbar, ditto, ditto.

This bothers me, given the 1900 Census. If he was living there in 87-90, and, again, in
1910, why was someone else living at that residence in 1900???

Oddly, in 1900 US Census, the family at #50 Boyden is the Leary Family, Thomas
and Joanna and children.

1890 there's a William Dunbar on 21 School Street, a driver (THIS could be
"Jr."????)

Closest in IGI would be the following, but serious doubts it's the right William:

Birth: 07 JAN 1842
Christening: 22 FEB 1842 Fetteresso, Kincardine, Scotland
s/o William Dunbar and Barbara Inglis

1920 US Census for Brockton, Plymouth, MA

Residing at 50 Boyden Street:

Dunbar, Agnes M., head, f, w, 67, Wd, arr: 1868, Natur. 1870, b. Can, parents Can.,
Dunbar, Sarah R., head, f, w, 33, Wd, MA, MA, MA (next "family", so not listed as D-in-L).
Dunbar, Florence R., dau, f, w, 8, S, MA, MA, MA
Dunbar, George C., son, m, w, 6, S, MA, MA, MA
Dunbar, Anna M., dau, f, w, 4y11m or 4y4m, S, MA, MA, MA
Dunbar, Edith P., dau, f, w, 1y5m, S, MA, MA, MA

In 1930 Census, Agnes is still living at 50 Boyden, now alone, no family,
listed as 76, widow, b. Canada.
parents b. Scotland.

What was, in 1930, 50 Boyden, is, currently, #48 Boyden. The original plot was "divided up" in 1938, so the house currently numbered as 50 is NOT the house the family lived in, from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. See picture.

WOW!!! Now... here's an ODD twist!

In IGI, listing of an Agnes M. McDonald, d/o Archibald McDonald and Nancy Champvon (Champion?), who married to a William H. Dunbar, 23-Jul-1907, Manhattan, New York, USA!!! That William is listed as born England, s/o William H. Dunbar and a Mario n Bunting.
