  • Name: Isaac Newton Hanselpacker
  • Birth: 21-JUN-1860 in: New Brunswick, Canada
  • Death: 16-MAY-1938 in: Westmoreland County, New Brunswick, Canada
  • Father: John Hanselpacker
  • Mother: Eleanor Ann MacDonald

Notes: Info from Ruby Cusack indicates there was an Isaac Hanselpacker in Miramich area, who had a son, Jake, sometime around 1825. Perhaps, this is another "missing line", where Jake was this Isaac's father? Worth considering, however... not goin g to be an easy "proof". Interesting reading can be had on Isaac and Jacob, by going to:

Isaac Hanselpecker neighbor of the Mr & Mrs. F. Beavan near Long Creek in NB @1845

Jacob Hanselpecker "Jake" a son of Isaac, was born about a week before the Miramich Fire, which was in 1825.

There is a Long Creek (settlement) in Johnston Parish, Queens Co., NB

Based on timeframe, this Isaac would have to be a son of Phillip Henselbekker (loyalist) or his sons, John or Peter. Peter shows only daughters, and nothing close to an Isaac listed for John and his wife, but could be a record of baptism that som ehow got missed, I suppose.

NOW, back to THIS Isaac... Isaac Newton Hanselpacker....

Resided in Moncton, NB in 1931. Appears in 1901 Westmoreland Census as "Isaack" (though listed in index as "Isaiah" it's more correctly Isaack on the printed page), thusly: "CM3-10-46 HAUSELPACKER, Isaiah, 40, Flora A." in the online index. Isaa c, by only previous record seen, was supposedly born in 1847, and not 1860, which is listed in the Census. The first serial number, equates to the following information: Moncton City, Division 3, page 10, line 46.

Could there be two? One born in 1860 and the other in 1847/49? If so, the one married to Amelia E. Addison was born closer to 1848 than 1860. 1881 Census for Portland, St John, Canada (Ref: NAC C-13179 Dist 25 SubDist F Page 105 Family 537)

CONCERN: Was it Isaac who married Amelia Addison (this we KNOW to be fact) and Isaiah, or another Isaac who married Flora Garland? Or, as suspected, did Isaac merely marry twice? As for the age/birthyear controversy, either year of birth woul d still work with marriages and children, so, until more is known, will leave b.d. as 1847, with possibility of 1861.

MOST interesting is his listing as "Scotch" descent, in the 1901 Census. Could this Isaac actually not be a true, biological Hanselpacker? One who WAS originally a "Hauselpacker"? How is THAT Scottish??? Something to consider.

Ah, but in 1911, the 1860/1849 controversy is settle for good... 1911 Canada Census for Moncton, Westmorland Co, NB:

Hanselpelker n Moncton, Westmorland, NB #123 Lutz Street
Isaac, 62 b. Jun-1849
Flora, 38
Eleanor, 11
Edna, 9
Emma, 8

Though barely readable on the Census, it appears he worked for an oil company. ALMOST looks like "Robinson Junk Oil Co." Though the first word may also be his position in the company. VERY hard to read.

Perhaps his ancestry might be found through clues on his death certificate:

ISAAC N. HANSELPACKER, (M), 16 May 1938, WE, F19345 Vol. 116 #17077

In 1881 Census for St John, believe this Isaac appears as follows:

Isaac N. Hanselpacker, b. <1849> N.B. , age 32, Shoemaker, Married, English, Baptist. - Ward No. 4, Portland, St John, New Brunswick. THIS is the one who appear in St John with Eleanor (widow of John Hanselpacker)... question is , is he a brother or son to John and Eleanor? Isaac born in 1860 is NOT the same Isaac listed in 1871 McAlpine's directory, but... MAY be related.

Now, WHICH of the two married Flora and/or Amelia?

Here's a narrative, courtesy of Ruby Cusak, taken from Mrs. Beavan's recollections surrounding the Miramichi Fire:

"Isaac Hanselpecker remembered the burning of Miramichi during the summer his son, Jake, was born, and how on that day Washington Welford went off to get yoked to Ellen Ross. When the fire started, Isaac headed for the river with his wife and chil d. Suddenly a horse galloped through the flames with Washington Welford in the saddle, holding in his arms the scorched and blackened corpse of his beloved Ellen Ross."
