Notes: Death place of Saint John is only a suspected possibility. Although Samuel's early life is unremarkable, later records show he farmed about 600 acres at Exeter, Rhode Island, on which he had a hefty mortgage. He was also active in the Militia . In May, 1745, he was elected Lieutenant of the 3rd North Kingstown Company of Militia, and the following year, elected Captain. However, during the Revolutionary War, Samuel remained a Loyalist which would cost him his farm and ultimately, hi s country of birth.
