HOPKINS, Harold Manuel "Sonny" "Hoppy"
HOPKINS, Harold Manuel "Sonny" "Hoppy" - 73, Bear River, passed away September 21, 2005, in Digby General Hospital. Born in Midgic, Westmoreland Co., N.B., November 7, 1931, he was a son of the late Manuel Harold and Dorothy Rebecca (Phinney) Hopk ins. He battled cancer bravely for a number of years. Hoppy enlisted in the Canadian Army Special Forces and served in the United States, Japan, and Korea as a member of the 2nd Battalion with the Royal Canadian Regiment. On his return to Canada , he enlisted in the regular forces as a member of the Canadian Provost Corps. He retired after 25 years (1977) as Master Warrant Officer and had served in Canada, Germany, Cyprus and Egypt. Following retirement he served 15 years as a storesma n with Base Supply Section CFB Cornwallis. During this period he served with the Naval Reserve, No. 26 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Cornwallis as Supply Officer, Executive Officer and finally as Commanding Officer. He retired with the rank of Na val Lieutenant in 1996. He served as Sergeant Major at CFB Cornwallis 1971-74. He loved hockey (both playing and coaching), having managed the rink in Digby 1978-79. He was a past member of Bear River Fire Department, past president of Home and Sc hool Association, Summerhill School, Oromocto, N.B. He served as Mayor of Cornwallis Community Council, 1972-73. He was a life member of the Korean Veteran Association, Atlantic Provinces, and member of the KVA of Canada and Provost Corps Associat ion, both National and Maritime. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 22, Bear River, Good Neighbours Club, Upper Clements (he loved working the brunches). Because of his love of family he enjoyed genealogy. A keen memory made hi m a very interesting person to talk to. Hoppy enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His home was his castle and his happiest times were spent there. He loved dancing (and sat very few out) and working in his flower gardens was a joy to hi m. He loved to have the grandkids visit and was so proud of all of them. Christmas was his favourite holiday and his home decorations showed this to be so. He always had a "big hug" and smile for everyone and was respected and loved by all who kne w him. He was proud to be a veteran and loved the veteran gatherings. He is survived by his loving and long-time companion, Doreen (Durling) Grant (Thanks for the wonderful happy "Hoppy" years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Lou (Nichol) Hopkins, and infant sist er, Barbara. Visitation will be Friday from 7-9 p.m. with Legion service at 8 p.m. in Jayne's Funeral Home, 7 Birch St., Digby. Funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Bear River United Baptist Church, Rev. Donald Scheels officiating. Interm ent in Mount Hope Cemetery, Bear River. Family flowers only.
