Notes: Immigrated about 1827 to Port Hastings, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.
According to family history, John arrived in Port Hastings, (Cape Breton) Nova Scotia around 1827 with his parents, three sisters and two brothers.* They first went to Hay River where they settled for a time on a farm later owned by Dan Lauchie Ma cKinnon (now owned by Allan Meagher).
From Hay River they moved to South Highlands, Cape Mabou.
For reasons unknownJohn was often referred to as "Big John Gibson" to which he did not take kindly. One story relates of a travelling salesman greeting him jovially by holding out his hand and saying, "how do you do Mr. Gibson." John immediatel y ran the salesman off the property.
The family were at Hay River from at least 1829, then moved to Cape Mabou sometime between 1847 and 1850. The whole family moved to Truro in 1888.
