Notes: Richard has sometimes been listed as son of Francis Matthews, Sr., and brother of course, of Francis Mathews, Jr.
Richard is believe to have been married twice. First to Hannah Fountain, and, after her death, to Rebecca Merriam (nee McVicar). As I've not read or heard of any children being born to Rebecca by Richard, I'll include her here as his second wife , as the impact on the tree is minimal (in case such is in error).
It is likely that he had other sons besides Stephen, based on 1851 Census records of Campobello Island, it is suggest that the other sons would have been: John (b. @1804), Thomas, and Abram. Most Mathews researchers believe these three to have be en sons of Richard (or brothers of Stephen, depending on sources).
Notes from Dale Barteau & Heather Waddingham have provided a great deal of the family connections for Matthews/Mathews, down to the generation of Nelson Alexander, of whom further details are found on online archive records. Following is a brie f paragraph describing some of Richards life in NB:
"Richard Mathis signed a lease on property on Campobello Island with David Owen on May 6, 1814. This lease refers to the same property also being leased to the brother of Richard, Francis. The rent for one year was $ 10 and half of the hay cu t in the field, also the right to pasture stock at the usual half share on the pasture. Book D, Page 404, # 451. Can be seen at
the record office at St. Stephen -1998."
"A Richard Mathis was a regular customer at the trading station at Indian Island around 1820."
"A Richard Matthews m. Rebecca McVicken about Jan. 1822. The ceremony was preformed by John Burgin and reported in the Jan. 5 issue of the Eastport Sentinel. This appears to be the same marriage that I have entered for Richard Matthews and Rebecc a Merriam on Dec. 2?, 1822. From Eastport City Records. "
"Contained in a listing of early McVicar notes is a reference to a Rebecca McVicar born 1800 married to a Richard Matthews. She is the daughter of Nevin And Lydia (Cousins) McVicar who settled at Mascarene, N. B. Rebecca was mentioned in an accoun t book from Popes Folly Island in 1822 and may have been a teacher on nearby Indian Island. We wonder if she had been married to Daniel Merriam earlier."

Notes: Date of Hannah's death is unknown, date of marriage is SURELY May 1802, but whether it was the 3rd, 8th, or 13th is a matter of opinion based on interpretation of records and copies of records.
