Notes: Notes from Mr. McClennan - - - Probate: in 1878, appeared before Judge James A. Dennison of the Probate Court, one John W. Small, being duely sworn, and sayeth that, "Charles E. Small, son of the aforementioned John W. Small, left this province in the year 1868 in company with Ainsley Armstrong, for Minnesota in the United States. The aforementioned John W. Small, with his wife and Thomas Ross , said that it was two years when he received the information on the death of his son. That event took place in October 1870. His wife, Mary Ann, supposedly survived him one month. In the month of November 1870, John Small received a letter fro m the Postmaster at Rochester, MN, stating that Charles E. Small had died in that place . . NOTE 1: The fact that they died a month apart and that they were still very young, suggests that there was some kind of epidemic, such as Cholera or Typhoid, in the Rochester area during the latter part of 1870. NOTE 2: Reference the witnesses for this marriage. John Small was either the brother or father of Charles. However, a Thomas Ross does not show up in the Ross family until 1914. I believe that this is further evidence that the Small family marrie d into two different Ross families.
