  • Name: Alvia Brockway
  • Birth: BET 1805 AND 1809 in: St. George, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada
  • Death: 30-MAY-1875 in: Greeley, Colorado, USA
  • Father: Reuben Brockway
  • Mother: Anna Hale

Notes: Of note, an Alvia Brockway, b. 29-Mar-1894, d. Nov-1971, in SSDI for LA/Hollywood, California.

Possibly that Alvia's father, Alvia Brockway, b. 21-Mar-1860, Canada, d. 6-Feb-1955, Contra Costa, CA. This one's tough to place, as do not know if Alvia (b. 1805-1809) was his father, or if he was a child of one of that Alvia's children?

The 1894 Alvia, listed in 1930 US Census for L.A. Calif., born in Washington (state), USA, though lists parents as born.. fa: Minnesota, mo: Calif. and this Alvia was doctor (Physician).

wife - Phebe/Phoebe E., b. @1895, Nevada (in 1920 .. Nebraska, Texas,
California)
dau - Shirley L., b. @1924, Calif.
dau - Mary V. b. @1926, Calif.

1895 Alvia, listed in Chicago, Illinois for 1920 Census, but has birth place of parents as Canada for both. He and Phebe were already married, and he was a medical student.

1910 Census shows 1895 Alvia in Calif, son of (listed as Jr.) Alvia Brockway, b. 1860, Canada and ?Enora?, b. @1885, Missouri. There is also living in the same house, a Harry (b. @1897), Elva (b. @1898), and Virgil BROCKWAY (so NOT stepchild bu t only child of Alvia and Elvora), all children born in Calif. Listed as step children of Alvia (1860), listing a father as born in New York, and, of course, mother born in Missouri. Indications are that Alvia and ?Enora? were both in a 2nd marria ge, so Alvia Jr. may NOT be son of Enora....

Alvia (1860) arrived US in 1869, naturalized 1884.

Enora more likely Elvora, as 1920 Census a bit clearer.

OF NOTE:

A washington (state) newspaper for Blaine, WA, stated the following in the 13-Feb-1890 issue:

"Mr. Alvia BROCKWAY, who used to live in Blaine, but is now connected with the N. P. express Co., at Tacoma, was a visitor to this place last week. He will take a trip back to Minnesota in a few days but not to remain there."

ANOTHER Alvia Brockway (listed as female in 1936), at www.orthohospital.org/press/991016_1.html

"The League (The League for Crippled Children, organized in Los Angeles in
1936) was the brainchild of Alvia Brockway. Denied the use of her legs following an auto accident when she was a child, Brockway recovered her ability to walk under the treatment of Charles LeRoy Lowman, M.D. who was also the founder of Orthopaedi c Hospital. Pledging to help physically disabled children at Orthopaedic Hospital, Brockway recruited ten of her friends to help establish the League in 1936."

WWI Civilian Draft Registration shows Alvia Brockway, b. 29-Mar-1894, Tacoma, WA, residing at time of enlistment at White Pine, Nevada.

Unsure if related, but on same WWI Draft Reg list is the following entry:

Brockway, Lloyd Vinton, b. 11-Jul-1896, Sutter, CA, residing White Pine, NV

1888 Plat Map Index, Anoka Co., MN, shows "BROCKWAY, Alvia, Columbus Twp., Sec 9, Pg 21"
