On JONATHAN...

One b. 1743-1747, s/o Joseph Vail and Grace Manning.

Joseph b. 1717, Morristown, NJ, d. 1804, N. Carolina, s/o John Vail and Martha Fitz Randolph!

Grace Manning, b. Union City, Indiana... NFI

Children of Joseph & Grace:

Joseph John VAIL b: 1741
Solomon VAIL b: 1743
Peter VAIL b: 1745
Jonathan VAIL b: 1747 in Middlesex, Piscataway Co., New Jersey
Grace VAIL b: 1749 in Middlesex, Piscataway Co., NJ
Hannah VAIL b: 1751 in Middlesex, Piscataway Co., NJ
Elizabeth VAIL b: 1752 in Middlesex, Piscataway, NJ

KNOWN that Peter and Jonathan removed to Canada (likely NS, at least initially). ANOTHER positive clue.... Some even indicating that Jonathan died in NS, but very little information other than that... He's surely a GREAT candidate, with matchin g information to the Jonathan in this database.

MAJOR problem with following, as no listing of this family includes a Jonathan, but the below MAY offer tie-in at some earlier generation, so leaving in place for now.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF Jonathan was brother of Abraham Vail, b. 1744, then following line of ancestors:

John Vail 1708-1754, m. (2) Margaret Laing (1710-bef 1751) Samuel Vail, 1678-1733, m. Abigail Hayden (1685-1724) Samuel Vail, 1654-1695, m. Elizabeth Hunt (1657-1757 ???) Thomas Vail, 1620-1687, m. Sarah Wentworth (1628 - UNK)

Abraham (b. 1744 d. 1824, m. Margaret FitzRandolph (1746-1826) had:

John A. Vail, b. 1777 d. 1832, m, Deborah Harned (1788-1861)
had:

Jonthan Harned Vail 1818-1852, m(2) Catherine Outcalt 1826-1902
had:

Jonathan Harned Vail 28-May-1852, New Brunswick, New JERSEY, d. 12-Mar-1926, at Rochester, NY. m. Anna Cortelyou Beekman b. 10-Jan-1853, d. 03-Jan-1938 at Plainfeld, NJ (d/o John Beekman and Sarah Manley) on 31-Oct-1870. He is known to have worke d with Thomas Alva Edison in NJ.

above Jonathan more commonly seen as "J.H. Vail"

Problem with some information on J. H. as there was, perhaps, also a John Holden Vail, with same death date (not going to pursue THIS line any further!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of VAILs, there was a Robert Vail (1761-1817) a member of the Vail family that settled in Long Island, NY in the 1600s. Robert was actually born in New Jersey (fits with Jonathan being a Loyalist member of the 2nd NJV!) and married th e daughter of Captain John Cougle (Mary Cougle) in NY in 1783. He removed from NY to Kings County, NB, at least by 1790, and had land close to Sussex Corner, NB. Robert was a merchant and mill owner around Sussex. He was buried on his own prope rty in an area that later became known as "Spicer's Field." Spicer's Field eventually became the Trinity Church Cemetery (Notes from Bob Dunfield of Karsdale, NS).

Might this Robert have been brother or cousin to Jonathan?

Need to explore the 2nd NJV links.

One such link MIGHT be MARY VAIL, who married Dennis Combs. Dennis had been a coachmaker in Middlesex County, NJ, and served as Adjutant in the 3rd NJV. He was married in NB, on 22-Feb-1784 to Martha VAIL. Perhaps, again, a sibling or cousi n to Robert and/or Jonathan?

NY/NJ early records offer some variant spellings, such as Veil, Veal, Veale, Vayle, etc. Yet, just how these families may be connected is not altogether clear.
