Notes: If born 1727, most likely in Holland, if 1740, more likely in New Jersey. There's no reason not to believe that John's father, Thomas, was progenitor of the family line in the "colonies" and as stated, arrived in 1730, likely in the "New Amsterd am" area of what is now New York.

"About the year 1730 the earliest-known members of the family came to America from Holland, landing at Elizabethport, New Jersey. They went inland to the village of Caldwell, where they were prosperous and happy until their fortunes changed by th e American Revolution.
Lived on a farm where Newark, Essex Co., N.J. now stands, was a Tory, remaining loyal to the British Crown. During the Revolutionary War it was made so hot for him that he moved his family to New York, but on trying to cross himself, was capture d and held a prisoner for a year. In 1783 they were forced to flee with the Loyalists and settled on the Bay of Fundy, near Digby, Nova Scotia (in what is now Marshalltown).
The Edisons remained in Nova Scotia until 1811, when they all apparently moved to the Township of Bayham, where they received a land grant of some 600 acres along the banks of Otter Creek in what is now Elgin County, Ontario.

Believe some of the female lines remained in NS and possibly some of the earlier male lines. Surely, the family of Thomas Alva moved to Ontario, but not ALL the Edisons.
