Notes: George came from New York as a Loyalist and was a grantee of Saint John in 1785. George Ferris, UEL, is known to be one of the ones buried in "The Old Garrison Burying Ground," on land once owned by the grandfather of William Lloyd Garrison , on the Jemseg. Possibly owned by Jeff Dykeman (as of 2000). From Greenwood's "Early Baptists of Cambridge Parish" (pub. in 1941): ".. the original Ferris families of the Mill Cove district. GEORGE FERRIS, the Loyalist, lived on the Jemseg on the farm later owned by William Colwell. The property extended from the corner to Burton Thorne's upper line. He is buried in the "Old Garrison Burying Ground" on the farm of Jefferson Dykeman . He had four sons, all of whom settled in White's Cove and Mill Cove. JOSEPH lived on the farm now owned by John Gardner. WILLIAM lived by the short at Adamson's beach. JOHN lived on the farm now owned by MacLean Sharp. GEORGE lived on the farm now owned by William Cole. Most of the people of White's Cove, Mill Cove, Waterborough, and Union Settlement have blood ties with these four original families." According to E. Stone Wiggins' History of Queens County, the following is how the Ferris line came into being in Queens County: "FERRIS - There were six Loyalists of this name, in all probability members of the same family, viz; Caleb, George, Joshua, Joseph, and Peter, of Westchester County, New York. Caleb and Joshua were protestors against the Whigs in 1775. George, Jo shua and Peter settled in Saint John in 1783, and were grantees of that cit [sic], Joseph was a Captain in the Rangers, under Colonel Butler. During the war he was captured by his brother-in-law, who was a rebel, but escaped from captivity . At the close of the struggle he went to Newfoundland, but subsequently settled in New Brunswick. He lived in Eastport, Maine, after it was captured by the British in 1812, but returned to the Province after its restoration to the United States . He received half pay. He died at Indian Island in 1836, aged ninety-two. John came to Saint John in 1783, and subsequently settled in Scotchtown, on lot number 23, of which he was the original grantee. His children were: John, who married Mary McLean,; George, Miss Blizzard; Joseph, Miss Cottle; William, Miss Myers ; also three daughters, Nancy, Catherine and Elizabeth. The familly is one of the most extensive in Queen's and includes some of its most industrious population. John Ferris, Esq., son of John, is its most wealthy citizen, and has represented th e constituency for more than a quarter of a century both in the Local and the Dominion Parliament. This indicates that there are six children listed as being those of George and Ms. Perkins, who may be children of John Ferris. Though, some, as is often the case, may appear in both families. It then becomes a real chore, to decipher whic h of the two children (cousins) married the respective spouse? For another time, to be sure. For now, I will leave Joseph, William, George, John, Margaret, and Elizabeth in only George's family. Mary will appear in both, one married to Solomo n Camp, the other to George Camp. Catherine, Rebecca, Jane, and Sally will be added to John's family. Given the Greenwood work on "Early Baptists of Cambridge Parish" I can see the eight children listed, as in other records (John, George, William, Joseph, Mary, Betsy, Margaret and Sarah). However, I also see some discrepancies that may be reaso n why the fits just aren't happening. Here's how Greenwood sees this family: Children of George Ferris and Miss Perkins: John m. Mary MacLean George m. Jane Blizzard William m. Patience Meyers Joseph m. Fanny Cottle Mary m. George Camp Betsy (Elizabeth) m. Robert Wade Margaret m. George MacLean Sarah m. Hanford Elsworth. According to Henry Berg, much of the Ferris Genealogy that Greenwood put forth in "Early Baptists" was incorrect ... which even I was able to deduce. However, based in John Ferris' will, it is more likely that, perhaps, SOME childrens' names wer e same in both families? John's listed children in will: Joseph, William, George, John, Margaret, Mary, Rebecca, Jane, Elizabeth, Catherine and Sally.
