A FORMER DIGBY MAN PASSES AWAY IN NEBRASKA [From the Merna ,Nebraska ,Postal Card] A wave of sadness passed over this community on Wednesday when the news was spread of the suden death of one of our best citizens , Jas. DALEY. Mr. DALEY had bee n working in the garden; and was called for dinner by Mrs DALEY. There was no response to the call and upon investigation he was found to be dead. James DALEY was born in Digby , Nova Scotia , May 8, 1840 . He was one of a large family , three sis ters of whom are living. James DALEY was married to Miriam E. BUDD December 18, 1872 . To this union was born two sons , Ernest and Budd. Ernest passed away in December 1886 at the age of eleven years. Mr. DALEY moved from Nova Scotia to Villisc a Iowa in September 1879. In the spring of 1880 in company with James WOOD he came to Custer county and filled a timber claim.He drove from Villisca four times and in the spring 1882 moved to his claim eight miles northwest of Merna.He arrive d at what was to be his future home May 10th of the same year. He was the first postmaster at Dale ,established at his residence in 1883 . In the spring of 1903 he came to live in Merna where he has spent much time and labour beautifying his hom e as he was very fond of beautiful and fragant flowers. Mr. DALEY united with the Episcopal church in young manhood and was a temperance worker in the early days.Those were the times when the prohibition movement was not looked upon with favour , as at the present time.He continued to be on the side of prohibition all through the years.His manner of life has been upright. He has been a regular attendant at church and public school gatherings. The Divine summons came to him very suddenl y May 10 1916 at his home in Merna Nebraska . He has filled out a well rounded life of 76 years and 2 days. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and one son and three grandchildren besides a host of friends. He was a considerate husband, a good fath er,and humble and unpretentious in his life. May rest be to his body and joy to his soul as he leaves his home here to dwell in the great Home beyond. The funeral services were held from M.E. Church Friday, conducted by Rev. J.W. FAIR , pasto r of the church. This was one of the largest attended funerals ever held in Merna and a large concourse of friends followed the remains to the last resting place in the Merna Cemetery. [Mr. Daley mentioned above ,was a brother of Mrs Oscar DAKIN , Digby; Mrs Coleman VANTASSEL of Westville, Digby Co. and Mrs Olliver STARK of Culloden.]

Death of a Digby Lady From the Merna Postal card Jan. 12 A wave of sadness
passed over this community on Friday when the sad news was spread of the
death of Mrs James DALEY. Mrs DALEY was stricken with bronchial pneumonia
last Sunday afternoon and only lived five days. Mrs DALEY was born in
Digby , Nova Scotia , May 28, 1848 and died Jan. 5 1917 age 67 years, 7
months and 8 days. Mrs DALEY was married to James DALEY December 18 1872 .
To this union was born two sons , Ernest and Budd. Ernest passed away in
December 1886 at the age of eleven years. They took from a home Ray HORTON
and raised him. She moved with her husband from Nova Scotia to Villisca
Iowa in September 1879 . In company with her sister , Mrs James WOOD and
family moved to Custer County , in the spring of 1882 , where she has
resided ever since. Mrs DALEY united with the Presbyterian Church in young
woman-hood and since moving to Mernia she has been a regular attendant of
the Methodist Church when able. She leaves to mourn her loss, one son G.
K.N. Budd who resides in Nova Scotia besides a host of friends. Her husband
James DALEY , preceeded her on May 10 1916. She lived a good Christain life
and is now with her loved ones who have gone on before. The funeral was
held at the M. E. Church which was completely filled with sorrowing
friends. The services were conducted by Rev. J.W. BLAIR , assisted by Rev.
J.W. ROLLINGS of the U.B. Church. Interment in Merna Cemetery.
